I’d like to remind people, especially in San Francisco that if the city wants to restore the commercial vibrancy of downtown, the thing it needs to do is reduce the cost of housing. And I believe the city has a number of measures in place to try to increase better priced housing.

But it’s only the very wealthiest income earners can afford to live here, there’s no space for anyone else and no space for businesses that would sell to them.

Affordability is a cornerstone of local business.

This is a black and white nighttime photo in landscape format looking along a pair of city tram tracks. San Francisco, California (2012).

The camera is positioned about 1m above the street and looking along along a straight stretch of tram tracks. The tracks are imbedded in the tarmac of the road. To the right is a second set of parallel rails. Suspended above the road are the electric cables that power the trams, these are shiny and reflect the light from the street below. The pavement on either side of the road is lined with mature trees that are covered in Christmas lights. Behind the pavement are the illuminated shop fronts of a city centre. The street is deserted.

The OUSD school cafeteria uses a terrible application called "LINQConnect" to share menus with families. This used to have an open read-only API, but was recently changed to put the API behind a short-lived JWT issued by a very scripting-unfriendly third-party auth vendor (auth0, who helpfully puts a CAPTCHA on every page). OUSD also used to provide a well-formatted printable menu, but that hasn't been updated since the beginning of February (presumably due to layoffs).

It's fucking offensive that public services like school lunches are outsourced to private contractors who put them behind a proprietary API. I have no particular interest in playing CAPTCHA cat-and-mouse with Auth0, but I'm not sure what other options I have available to me in this enshittified world.

Well it finally happened: I finally saw a gas pump that lost its nozzle and hose because someone drove away with it. #sfba
