Raymond Chandler, well known quote from "Red Wind"

"There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge."

Potential Critical Fire Weather Conditions in Southern California

"Critical fire weather conditions are possible January 23-25, as another round of Santa Ana Winds may emerge, coupled with anomalously dry weather conditions. Strengthening surface high pressure in the Intermountain West will likely favor an increase in Santa Ana winds over Southern California during this period.

a) There is a 40 to 50% chance of below normal precipitation in Southern California next week. Below normal is defined as the driest third of climatologically observed precipitation for mid to late January...."

Critical fire weather conditions are possible January 23-25, as another round of Santa Ana Winds may emerge, coupled with anomalously dry weather conditions. Strengthening surface high pressure in the Intermountain West will likely favor an increase in Santa Ana winds over Southern California during this period.

a) There is a 40 to 50% chance of below normal precipitation in Southern California next week. Below normal is defined as the driest third of climatologically observed precipitation for mid to late January.

b) Santa Ana winds have the potential to re-emerge, although the exact timing and magnitude remain uncertain. There is a 40-60% chance of hazardous high winds January 23-25. High winds are defined as winds that exceed the 85th percentile for mid to late January.

Widespread critical fire weather conditions, downed trees/power lines, continued smoke and poor air quality, and power outages are possible if the dry and windy conditions are realized.

An upper ridge will move over the state on Wednesday and hgts will
rise to about 583 dam. More importantly a strong sfc high will
build into the Great Basin and offshore gradients are forecast to
approach 7 mb from both the E and N setting the stage for a
moderate possibly strong Santa Ana. Advisory level gusts 45 to 55
mph look likely in the Santa Ana wind corridor (A line from the
Santa Clarita Vly to the western Santa Monicas) These winds will
bring renewed fire weather danger to the windy areas. The ridge
and upper high will combine to bring 4 to 8 degrees of warming to
most areas. Most max temps will be 10 to 15 degrees above normal
and most of the csts and vlys will see temp in the 70s with a
smattering of lower 80s possible.

.LONG TERM (THU-SUN)...16/314 AM.

Thursday will be like Wednesday only weaker. Offshore flow will be
about 50 percent as strong as Wednesday's values. The winds will
be much weaker with the only possibility of advisories occuring in
the windiest areas. Look for several degrees of cooling across the
csts/vlys due to the diminished offshore winds, but the interior
will warm a few degrees as there will not be as much cool air
pouring into the area. Max temps will remain many degrees above
normal.

@ai6yr Ben, on the net this morning, the topic came up of insects dealing with Santa Ana winds. In the past I've seen scores of bees miles offshore struggling on the water's surface after a wind like this. Have you seen impacts on your hives?

Ensembles not backing down from a potentially widespread strong #SantaAnaWind event Wed/Thu. Will be interesting to see how pattern develops.

#FireWx will be a significant issue."
