Slot Canyon Walls” — Soft light penetrates the depths of a slot canyon.

The material making up the walls of Southwest slot canyons varies quite a bit depending on which strata the canyon traverses. Sometimes the rock can be broken and somewhat unattractive, sometimes it can hold fossils or show joints between different layers. But in some places the sandstone seems pristine — solid layers of rock broken only by small details and textures. That was the case here, at a spot where a canyon junction allowed in a bit of extra light…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2026/01/05/sl

“Slot Canyon Detail” — Details of the wall of an Utah slot canyon, illuminated by reflected light.

There is a lot I could write about this photograph, the circumstances of making it, and how it ended up here today. First off, it is an older photograph, made years ago. I periodically revisit my old raw file archives, and I always discover photographs that I left behind. In this case, someone else’s photograph from the Southwest triggered me to review my older work from Utah, much of which is over a decade old. So far, I’ve rediscovered about twenty interesting Utah images from that period. Stay tuned!…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/10/04/sl

The views from the floor of the canyon were amazing with the multitudes of textures and swirls and layers of canyon walls that have been cut by water and wind over time. And the different colors due to light were unbelievable! Here there is a small opening at the top where only a sliver of blue sky can be seen when looking straight up. by Debra MartzThe views from the floor of the canyon were amazing with the multitudes of textures and swirls and layers of canyon walls that have been cut by water and wind over time. A hiker with a backpack navigates a narrow red rock slot canyon in southern Utah. Curving sandstone walls rise tightly on both sides, worn smooth by years of water and wind erosion.

Possibly the most popular slot canyon in the United States, the spectacular Antelope Canyon is located 90 minutes from the South rim of the Grand Canyon and close to the town of Page, Arizona.

A slot canyon with smooth, curving walls in deep reddish-brown hues. Light from the open sky above filters down, illuminating the intricate patterns formed by erosion. Two people stand inside—one capturing a photo of the other—framing the natural beauty of the canyon. The scene highlights the dramatic contrast between shadowed rock formations and bright sunlight above, emphasizing the canyon's depth and textures.

We did it! 5 days, 4 nights, 45ish miles, one dunk in a muddy river, and the time of our lives. #pariacanyon #buckskingulch #backpacking #slotcanyon

We stepped into Antelope Canyon just as the sun hit its prime angle, with shadows shifting from red to violet to gold.

While it’s incredibly photogenic, it felt more like a place to experience than to capture.

A view of the smooth, swirling sandstone walls inside Antelope Canyon in Arizona. The rock formations display rich hues of orange, brown, and mauve. Sunlight filters in from above and casts an ethereal glow, highlighting soft curves and striations. A faint blue tint appears where the light hits the rock at certain angles, creating a surreal, painterly effect.
