With the absence of #20sPlenty and #SlowStreetNetworks, more intrusion for #SpeedSafetyCamerasSaveLives: The Flock network is separate from the speed enforcement cameras (also) being installed in San Francisco this year. Flock is not used for moving violations or traffic citations, and it doesn’t use facial recognition technology, officials said.
The Flock system works with police databases of suspect vehicles, including those used in Amber Alerts, compiled from departments all over the region.

#RegulatoryFailureOrDrownInABathtub. Inequality- supersizing your mobile dining room kills those fated to walk:
Since the 2008 recession, SUVs and pickup trucks have overtaken sedans and station wagons as the top selling vehicles. Now almost three-in-four new cars sold is an SUV or pickup. A number studies have confirmed the relationship between larger vehicles and rising pedestrian deaths. A 2015 review of the research by NHTSA found pedestrian who were struck by SUVs were 2.5 to three times more likely to be killed. Research by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety examined how squarer, more “aggressive-looking” front ends — which are in fashion right now in the automobile industry — contribute to the problem.

#GiveFeetAChance: Strong Towns Steinbach is hoping that council make Steinbach more bike and pedestrian friendly, as they say car-pedestrian and car-bike near-misses are common.
They want bike paths to be integrated into a network with good path-to-path and path-to-road connections.
“Today, in Steinbach, citizens who do not own or cannot operate a car are severely disadvantaged relative to citizens who can access and drive cars,” says Strong Towns Steinbach. “Car-only access is a form of inequity that discriminates against the young, the elderly, the physically challenged, and the working poor for whom cars are not an option.”

JonathanVankin for California Local- In California, speeding-related tragedies were 35 percent of the total 4,285 traffic fatalities in the state happened due to excessive speeds. That’s about 1,500 deaths.
Friedman also authored 2021’s AB43, which allows local governments to lower speed limits without following the state-mandated “85th percentile rule,”
Under Friedman’s new legislation, AB645,  Los Angeles, San Jose, Oakland, Glendale, Long Beach and San Francisco will be allowed to install the automated cameras—previously prohibited under state law—in “high injury network” areas, that is, areas where the highest percentage of crashes occur. The cameras will also be allowed near schools, and in areas prone to street racing.
