#DaylightingSavesLives: A California pedestrian-safety law that went into effect statewide Jan. 1 cemented efforts cities has sought for years to put more distance between parked cars and crosswalks, with drivers facing warnings this year and fines starting in 2025.
The new law, which Gov. Gavin Newsom signed in October, prohibits #parking within 20 feet of either side of a marked or unmarked crosswalk, about the length of a standard parking space, whether or not the curb is painted red.
The cleared space makes it easier for people in cars to see pedestrians approaching the crosswalk — an idea known as daylighting.
