Good basement mixing session on the new song tonight. On the main vocal, I used Warren Huart’s vocal thickening trick, although not quite as radical. I cloned two duplicate vocal tracks, then pitch shifted one track down 3 cents and panned hard left. Then did the opposite on the other cloned vocal track - pitch shifted it up 3 cents and panned hard right. So I have the main vocal track, plus two additional clone vocal tracks slightly off pitch panned wide (with the volume levels way down on the cloned tracks). I also used another of Warren’s vocal thickening tricks - the octave down vocal pitch shift buried in the mix. So I’ve got four vocal tracks in total. Doing some artwork for the song now. #music #recording #songwriting #audio

A year to the day that I released my last album of original songs, recorded in a corner of my bedroom -- Living In The Static -- I am getting ready to release nine new original songs tomorrow. I've been working on the words and music since December. The new album is called In The Slowdown (which is also the name of the title track).

In other news, I think I finished the second song for my album. I'll have to listen to it again after a day or two for final tweaks, but it's very much there. That's one song every 3 months, so if I continue at this rate I may have an album in a couple of years ! I sure hope so 😄 #songwriting

Another basement session working on the new tune. Got the bass done and started some prelim mixing. The beater $50 craigslist Yamaha keyboard I bought years ago has a bit of a delay when you hit the keys on a few of the strings and synth settings. Can’t adjust it, so having to sync things up a bit in the DAW. Started tweaking vocals with some EQ and using the Klanghelm DC1A for a very mild saturation. Great free plugin. Lots of mixing to do now. And some volume automation on the rhythm guitar tracks. #music #recording #audio #songwriting

Short week as I'm headed to the ECMAs so no streams on Thursday or Friday. (Apologies to my fellow Yakuza fans!) We'll sing songs from the East Coast on the Warble, and on Tuesday night I'm hosting Hambones Open Mic over on their Youtube channel. Will hopefully be able to record on Tuesday, and of course, start your days with songs on TikTok, and you week with the Monday Morning Sing Song.

A pair of black and red Louboutin heels, an electric classical Yamaha guitar that looks like just a black outline of a guitar, and a banana sitting on a table with a table cloth that has sheet music printed on it. Just behind is a half wall painted to look like a piano keyboard, and in the distance is a stage with a couple Marshall stacks and a drum kit.

Good evening session in the basement tonight. Got the bass line sussed on the new song. Took about 8 takes to nail it. For me, it always helps to have the vocal track down first to play bass over. I’m realizing it’s a fine art to play a good bass line without dominating or taking over the song. Basically, keeping it simple and steady but also interesting, with a few good line runs that don’t compete or conflict. Also inserted drum fills tonight, and registered the song with SOCAN. Getting closer to mixing. #music #recording #bass #guitar #songwriting

Currently working on finishing up a 4 song EP with my long time collaborator/co-writer. Decided we wanted to end one of the songs with a large group sing so this evening I have about 30 friends coming over and I'm gonna set up a couple of mics and give it shot. It'll be interesting to see if it works.
Any logistical tips are greatly appreciated!

Did a few prelim bass tracks down in the basement tonight. Getting a feel for the bass line on the new song. I always start bass lines way too complicated, then go, ah crap, and go back to the basics. Usually takes 2 test tracks for me to realize it. Also tonight I added (copy/paste) 16 bars of the rhythm guitar tracks mid-song for a break in the vocals just before final verse. Then of course I had to shuffle the vocal track section along to sync up. It extended the song length from 3:08 to about 3:22. Now at least I know the song length to register it with SOCAN. Gotta come up with a title now. That’s always an interesting thing. Web search a title and it’s quite daunting to come up with a song title that’s not already used. I’ve found a couple possibilities from my lyrics that’ll work. Apparently, 5 words or less is good for titles. H’mmm. #music #recording #songwriting #audio

Finished comping vocals on the new song last night. Tracking bass tonight. I realized the song needs a vocal break before the final verse, so I’ll copy/paste 8 bars of my rhythm guitar tracks in there. Thank you audio editing software. #music #recording #songwriting

In the basement comping vocals tonight on the new song. Having never comped (or recorded) vocals on a radical tempo change song before, I found the comping process quite lengthy in the first slow part of the song, and once I got into the upbeat fast tempo part, things were really speedy. Likely due in part to the subtleties of a very slow vocal over a single instrument; mellow keyboards. And in the fast raunchier section of the song, there’s guitars, drums and bass. About halfway done now on the vocal comping. #music #recording #songwriting

Good basement session. Did the slow bpm vocals last night, and finished up the faster ones tonight. Did 21 complete takes, so should be able to comp something decent from that. Screenshot of DAW shows the tempo bar up top with the bpm change point. Tempo change also shows in the big vertical vocal track break. Having fun! #music #recording #songwriting
