We're about to record something with @jeremy@mastodon.classicyou.nl ! Mic'd and tracked the drums. The drummer was really stoked about the tom mics, for him these Sennheiser MD421s (well, BF521s but those are basically the same) are the holy grail for toms.
So tomorrow we're going to record some drums and maybe some guitars. We're going to do just one song but it's quite a banger according to the other guys.

🧵 So, the #Recording with the vintage #RME #Fireface400 in #Ardour on old #macOS on a #MacBookPro 2017 went well, I guess.
This thread started with me praising #Pipewire on #Linux.
And yes, I still believe Pipewire is what users of Windows and OSX will envy us Linuxers for. One fine day.
As it is for now, none of my professional audio interfaces works with it. The Yamha 01v96i via USB doesn't, the RME Digi9652 (vintage PCI) doesn't, and the Fireface400 (vintage Firewire) used to work well with Jack's firewire backend, but it doesn't work so well with the newer ALSA kernel driver apparently.
It is possible to run these interfaces using a mixed mode of #Jack and Pipewire on #UbuntuStudio 24.04 still, but it means that you lose most of the convenience Pipewire actually introduces.
So, sadly, my conclusion for today is: Class Compliant USB audio interfaces and Pipewire are great. The rest, at lest for me & my gear, is not working.

I am currently preparing a mobile #Recording session on my #UbuntuStudio #Linux laptop.
I cannot over-emphasize the coolness of #Pipewire, the new Linux audio system!
So while I'm testing a couple of expensive mics with my #RME #FireFace400, the actual result is to be used as a #VoiceBox announcement.
So how to monitor this audio in a realistic way?
Well, turns out I can pair my mobile phone using #Bluetooth with Pipewire. Then I can call up myself from the mobile on my fixed line phone… and simply play back the audio from #Ardour via my mobile all the way through the lousy phone network right into my fixed line phone.
This is just amazing!
(#ffadoMixer still is inconvenient to use when compared to #TotalMix and I still have to figure out how to run it not as root, but oh well, can't have the cake and eat it, I'd say.)

I've always remembered a description once offered by a true audio electronics wizard with degrees in physics and other sciences:

He was describing analog tape machines, regardless of cost/quality. I like to recall that when beset by the self appointed audio police... 'audiophiles' 😂
Finally got my audio stack in my office into a real rack.
It was all going into a Crown amp and a rack-mount graphic equalizer I found at Goodwill for $10 each like 5 years ago, so it was halfway a studio setup anyway. All that into Cambridge M50 monitors, which have served me well for 20 years.
Added a 12-channel Mackie mixer that actually lets me plug in 4 or 5 synths and mix them, and pull in my Arturia audio interface along with up to 4 mics, one for my Zoom, and 2-3 for guitar and vocal recording as needed. 🎹🎸🔊
Biggest bonus: this heavy equipment is no longer sitting in my basement window-well blocking the window from opening, so now I have a fire exit again! 🔥 Kinda important.

So I used #Harrison #TripleDelay in #Mixbus10Pro and had it sync to host tempo.
The project is a typical one for me, it's an entire concert recording. It is loooong. And it turnes out when Mixbus hasn't seen a tempo marker for a while it goes mad, running at 100% CPU load, which if course is sabotage to clean audio processing. (It doesn't happen when there is no tempo marker at all, though, only the initial tempo of the project.)
#Mixbus 11 is out now and for sale at US$ 149.99, so if you don't have Mixbus Pro already, go for it!
Me & myself, I'll probably wait for another year or so and drop in some more tempo markers.
Btw.: How many screens do you need?
