I’m working on recording for the RPM Challenge this month. I decided to start blogging about it (and maybe keep blogging about making music after February is over.)

First post is up. mathias.codeberg.page/first/

My kids got me some #guitar toys for Christmas and I am just getting around to using one of them. Was about to put some midi strings on a song I'm recording and remembered that the got me a tiny bow for a guitar. Sound is reminiscent of a cello.
Plan to mix in some midi strings with this song to give it a bit more of a real feel. Has anyone done this? Any tips?

So last week I rearranged my music #studio for better #acoustics. After getting some longer USB-C cables, my USB-C hub stopped working entirely along with my webcam (USB 2.0 but regardless of port). I'll have to #troubleshoot that stuff later.

What an improvement! The #sound is so much better and the #bass just oh-so-satisfyingly hits the chest....and now I have a ridiculous amount of free space in the studio.

Wiring up the last #synthesizer and a bunch of #MIDI stuff and we should be good to go! Looking forward to making some great #music this #weekend.

Somehow this is both my first but my latest ?

This was the first I ever made in 2012, with I wrote in 2019 and I recorded on November 26, 2020.

I originally released it with autotune, but I took the autotune off and it in time to release the new version for the 5th year anniversary of the vocals.

44 years ago today, February 6, 1982, Petula Clark debuted on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart at #74 with “Natural Love”. It went on to peak at #20 and spent a total of 14 weeks on the chart.

When I first heard "Natural Love" on the radio way back then, I assumed she was a new artist. Unaware at that time she'd been around for quite a while and had been chalking up the hits since the 60s.

I’ve happily collected many 45 RPM singles over the years. This is one I liked hearing on the radio and bought at my favorite record store to add to my treasured music collection over 4 decades ago. An image of the 45 RPM vinyl record of "Because I Love Him", the B-Side to the hit single, "Natural Love" by Petula Clark on Scotti Brothers Records released in late 1981. A (vintage style) photo of Petula Clark taken in the early 80s. She's holding her folded hands up in front of her chin, she is smiling and looking directly at the camera.

I'd like to say, when I first heard "Natural Love" on the radio way back then, I assumed she was a new artist. Unaware at that time she'd been around and had been chalking up the hits since the 60s.

So, I know all too well, how this generation of youngsters sometimes aren't aware of just how legendary some people are when first getting introduced to their music.

I'm the opposite of an early adopter, but what the #Ardour #DAW folks have put into version 9 released yesterday… it's a a huge leap for dawkind. 😅 Makes me want to upgrade.

The list of improvements is very long.

Second article sur ma petite capsule Gemini. Une petite réflexion qui découle du festival du film court à Clermont-Ferrand. Ça parle de silence, de faux raccords et de triche.

37 years ago today, February 4, 1989, Baillie & the Boys debuted on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart at #69 with “She Deserves You”. It went on to peak at #8 and spent a total of 21 weeks on the chart.

This is from my years in the radio broadcasting business. Many singles would get thrown away as they’d
receive several duplicates at the station. I’d go through and pick out the ones I wanted to keep.

Damn, just saw this. I've already found an awesome FOSS replacement for Traktor Pro, but my years of investment & reliance on KOMPLETE products will be tough to replace.

Just went out my own sounds for the first time in a while!

This time I used an -source recorder on my phone because the pre-instaled one asked me to give up my recordings to AI.

I also setup a between my phone and laptop so that every sound I record automatically goes to my when i connect to my wifi, that's gonna spare me a lot of time and redondant action !

2026 RPM Challenge Day 2/28

My arm feels so much better today. 90% better. Maybe even 95% better. I think I’m going to be okay to play the guitar again. Assuming we don’t get more snow in the immediate future and I screw myself up again. We’ll see.

I added three songs worth of bass riffs and drum parts yesterday. It’s all just MIDI at this point and there are no arrangements or song forms or anything. Just riffs. Nothing to write home about yet. I’m up to four total. All four are in different time signatures (4/4, 7/8, 9/8, 3/4) and I’ve only repeated a key signature once (A minor, B minor, and two in E minor… I’m totally a guitar player).

I have a sneaking suspicion that some of the songs will be on the really long side this year, but I almost always have that suspicion and they generally barely hit three minutes. We’ll have to see how things play out. I also want to follow a similar plan as last year’s RPM Challenge where I played more acoustic guitar than usual, and I played a little saxophone. I’d like to do those two things again, but given my time constraints this year (and the fact that there are more people living in the house this year) I might just stick to electric guitar and headphone amps.

As far as lyrics go… I haven’t written anything yet but it’s safe to say that a running theme might be something like fuck fascists. You know… the usual.

So that’s where we stand after two days. Hopefully I’ll be able to carve out some time to make a little progress today on day three.

Finished #recording drums for the first #hatsunohado record last week and began tracking #guitars.
This will be the first record where I’ll be in charge of mixing the songs, so there’s still a lot of knowledge to acquire.

We are #diy and want to keep it that way. If you have any experience mixing #screamo #Skramz or related music and have any advice to share: Feel free to do so!

#AudioEngineer I have the weirdest situation. I use an UMC1820 with a Focusrite Octopre MKII Dynamic.
Both worked together under Linux, until they didn't: The Locked light wasn't shining anymore and no signal came from the pre.
I connected the interface to a Win PC, also, no Locked LED and no sound from the pre.
But: When I set the Focusrite to Internal clock and the UMC to OpticalIn so that the pre gives the clock to the UMC, then the devices are locked and I get sound from the pre to my DAW.
