#SouthernDamselfly

C. mercuriale is fairly active but has seen a decline in individuals near the destroyed spot between Z II & III.

Speaking of this spot, it appears that both demoiselle species were completely wiped out during the process. While C. mercuriale continues to grow near the main street bridge. C. splendens already disappeared before the remains of the Salix sp. that got partially uprooted during a storm a few years ago were cut and removed.

A southern damselfly (Coenagrion mericuriale) resting on grass. It still lacks the blue colors on its thorax, indicating that this immature male must have hatched recently.

While there still is some time until the odonata season kicks off in my area, this male C. mercuriale still fascinates me due to his throax pattern. It's known that members of this genus can resemble each other but I haven't seen anyone document C. mercuriale with an abdomen similar to that of C. hastulatum.

(Also apologies, Vernissage doesn't support status edits so I had to delete my last post due to poor alt text.)

Does this require a NSFW tag? I mean, it's two Coenagrion mercuriale in a "wheel".

Speaking of C. mercuriale: A while ago I falsely claimed to have seen a C. hastulatum. It turns out it was just another C. mercuriale but with a second segment closely resembling that of C. hastulatum. It turns out that my area doesn't harbor any northern damselflies and instead just multiple variations of its southern cousin. On the other hand, I discovered a blurry shot of Enallagma cyathigerum in my archive, so the amount of odonata species remains at nine. Not bad for an area that didn't host any damsel- and dragonflies for decades.

Finally getting back into field trips, albeit slowly. I was greeted by a southern damselfly (Coenagrion mericuriale) resting near a pile of rubble dumped by one of my neighbors just shortly after leaving my home.
