I'm jumping on this BUG bandwagon. In August 2023, I picked a beautifully ripe apple from a tree while walking around Ann Arbor, Michigan. I had eaten most of it before I noticed the sweet ladybug nestled in the dimple where the stem is located. No more nibbles from that apple for me! I set the apple down at the base of a tree and said farewell to the bug.

I hope it happily munched on aphids and other destructive insects and had many more ladybug offspring.

A mostly eaten apple is held in a woman's hand. If you look closely, you can make out the ladybug sitting at the base of the stem. It is round and red with tiny black dots.

Mantis eyes always appear to be looking at you but it’s an illusion created by the structure of their eyes. (Pseudopupil) The light absorbing lenses (ommatidia) appear dark because you’re looking straight through that one, while the surrounding lenses reflect light.

A collection of 8 prints drying on a tabletop. They are incomplete and show a portion of a leaf with dark green patterned on pale grey-green paper. Each one has a curved cut so a round flap of leaf is hanging down and casting a shadow and revealing its obverse pale side with visible veins.

I put fast moving insects into the fridge prior to photographing them to slow them down. I showed the grandchildren an image of this Rove Beetle yesterday and there was GREAT excitement and squeals of delight when I told them I kept it in the fridge. Not so much when they saw it was only 3mm long. Amazing things, modern macro lenses! #Insect #Macro #Photography

A close-up photograph of a green grasshopper, prominently featuring its exceptionally long, slender antennae, perched on a textured, light-brown wooden surface. The grasshopper’s vibrant green body and red-tinted legs are sharply detailed, with its antennae extending gracefully into the frame. The background is softly blurred, hinting at a natural, green environment.

ELECTRICAL POWER SUPPLY QUESTION

Can anyone here sanity-check the #electrical #power solution I've ended up planning for my next automated #insect monitoring tool?

This will be a unit running on mains power. It includes a #RaspberryPi 4B controller (also running a #camera and various sensors), along with a number of high-powered #LEDs (to attract insects and to illuminate photos).

The #RPi requires 5V supply and I am using an A009 BuckBlock to deliver constant current for the LEDs. This works optimally with a 24V supply.

The RPi will turn the lights on and off using a relay.

At present, I'm thinking that the best approach is to power the whole unit with a 24V AC-DC converter and then use a second 24V-5V converter to step down this DC for the RPi.

That means three power converters are required. In this diagram:

The cyan converter is for mains (ground is back through this converter, but the diagramming tool was not good for representing this).

The yellow converter steps down for the RPi power.

The pink converter delivers constant current for the lights.

Am I missing something? Can this be done better? Will I need additional capacitors to stabilise the RPi voltage when turning on the lights suddenly draws down an extra 27W, or should a decent step-down converter handle that?

TIA for any assistance.

Electrical circuit showing mains supply (240V) coming in at the left and converted to 24V DC. A second conversion steps down to 5V to supply a Raspberry Pi microcontroller which is shown as switching a relay to enable a third conversion to supply nine LEDs with 2.1A constant current. The diagram is black on white with the three conversion components coloured cyan, yellow and pink.

Four (parasitic) #wasps (#Hymenoptera) from a SLAM #Malaise sample in #Canberra #Australia over the last three weeks. Natural areas everywhere are (or should be) full of beautiful #insects like these, all just going about their business.

A #FairyWasp in the genus #Mymar - the first I have seen here in the nominate genus - see how tiny this #insect is.

An #ichneumon wasp (#Ichneumonidae) in the subfamily #Campopleginae - probably possible to get this one to genus, but most Australian species are unnamed.

#Vosleria australia (or at least that's the only named Australian species in the genus) - family #Encyrtidae

#Anastatus, unknown species - family #Eupelmidae

The wings are very narrow and end in a black flag-like blotch.Narrow-bodied wasp with a black head, thorax and base to the metasoma. The rest of the insect is a vivid orange. The antennae are long and black, curving backwards like oryx horns.Small wasp, mainly black but with transparent bands across the forewings. The eyes are large and red. The antennae are almost as long as the body. The edges of the segments of the thorax are edged in orange-brown.A long-bodied (and long-necked wasp), mainly blackish, but with a white band around the base of the metasoma. The mouthparts and the tarsi of the legs are yellow. The wings are dark with a whitish cross-band. The antennae are folded down in front of the face like crash-protectors.
