🎵 Discovered: The universe's most punctual DJ! This mysterious cosmic object is dropping sick beats of X-rays and radio waves every 44 minutes. Scientists say it might be a dead star's greatest hits album, but they're still trying to figure out the genre. Even magnetars are taking notes! 🎧 #SpaceScience

Time warp 😵‍💫

At the MPIA in Heidelberg @mpi_astro today, Nienke van der Marel describing the reference science case for protoplanetary disks with the METIS mid-infrared instrument being built for the 39-m diameter European Extremely Large Telescope 🔭

The diagram she’s using to illustrate the stages of star & planet formation was made 30 years ago ✨

By me, when I was a staff member here at the MPIA 🙃👴

A woman standing in a planetarium talking to an audience with a picture projected behind her showing the four canonical stages of star and planet formation in graphical form.

Mars didn’t lose all its water to space — it buried it underground. This changes everything.

🌌 Auroras on Mars?

NASA’s Perseverance rover just captured something we didn’t expect — a glowing green aurora lighting up the Martian atmosphere.

That’s wild, considering Mars has no global magnetic field like Earth.

This rare image is rewriting what we know about space weather on the Red Planet.

NASA’s Hubble just spotted a “wandering” supermassive black hole devouring a star outside the galaxy’s center! 🌌🕳️ First-ever offset TDE detected—could reveal a hidden population of roaming black holes. 🚀✨ Read more: science.nasa.gov/missions/hubb #NASA #Hubble #BlackHole #SpaceScience #newz

More ideological vandalism across the ocean – the Tangerine Tyrant shutters NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York & sends everyone to work from home. For "efficiency" reasons 🙄

Seems like a prelude to eliminating GISS altogether, given the seminal work done by Hansen, Schmidt, & others on climate change science there, & the ignorant denialism the far-right specialise in as they profit from burning our planet.

Appalling.

Jupiter's throwback photos just dropped! 🌟 4.5 billion years ago: twice the size, 50x stronger magnetic field, absolutely serving gas giant realness ✨

Scientists found these receipts by studying Jupiter's tiny moons. The glow-down is real, but honestly? Still the solar system's biggest influencer 🪐

Space Journey / Gaia

Risograph, inspired by the movement pattern of the space telescope ‘Gaia’ (ESA), which has been mapping our galaxy since it was launched in 2013. Among other things, the data collected has been used to create the most detailed map of the Milky Way to date. The telescope was decommissioned on 27 March 2025

The work was realized during an Artist-in-Science Residency of the artist at the European Space Agency (ESA) hosted by Kultur einer Digitalstadt in Darmstadt in 2022.

The print was produced by Herr und Frau Rio in Munich and is a limited, signed an numbered edition.

The print by the German artist Swaantje Güntzel shows a pattern which was inspired by the movement of the space telescope "Gaia" which was launched by the European Space Agency in 2013. Three lines which mirror each other, one in blue, one in orange and one in yellow follow the journey of the telescope in space. The line starts on the left side of the sheet, goes from left to right , stops after covering 2/3 of the sheet and then changes into a circle which is repeated. The couloured lines are printed on white paper as a risography.

Turns out Mars has been keeping secrets! Scientists found a massive underground water layer (basically a cosmic water cooler) 5.4-8km below surface. Like finding your cat's hidden treat stash, but way cooler - literally! Could explain where Mars' ancient oceans went. Next question: any Martian fish stories? 🌊 #Mars #SpaceScience

📝 Just discovered: Space offers advanced jewelry-making classes! A magnetar's giant flare (with trillion-times-Earth's magnetic field) showed us a new way the cosmos creates gold & silver. The instructor's demo used more energy than our Sun produces in a million years. Talk about extra credit! ✨ #SpaceScience #Astronomy

If you have clear skies & a way to observe the Sun safely, perhaps with eclipse glasses or by projecting through binoculars as I’ve done here, have a look: the huge sunspot group AR4079, is putting on a lovely show 🌞

A multi-spot group with dark umbral cores & a very large penumbra around them 🙂👍

The smaller AR4076 is visible too.

Pretty dusk skies over over the Peterstal this evening, making for a nice view of the crescent Moon, its 'dark side' illuminated by Earthshine, sunlight reflected off the Atlantic Ocean.

Above & to the right of the Moon is Elnath, Beta Tauri, & to the lower left is Jupiter, with its moon Callisto visible to its upper left. Io & Ganymede were visible closer to the planet in higher-resolution images.

Nikon D7000 + 85mm lens at f/2, 2 sec, ISO 100.

A blue dusk sky with some very light clouds. The crescent Moon is towards the top, with Jupiter lower and to the left. There are dark pine trees silhouetted along the skyline below.
