🚀 [Case study] Context Chips in Survey Design: “Okay, but how does it feel?”

The story of how a weird little UI to collect sentiment alongside survey responses defied constraints and triumphed over skepticism through #usability testing.

This is about one of the novel UIs I designed when leading #StateOfHTML 2023 — the one I’m most proud of. 💙

I’ve been meaning to write this for over a year, finally found the time during this winter break!

My results in the #StateOfHTML 2024 survey: Features Score 200 points.

"Of the 49 features mentioned in the survey, you have used 14 and heard of 12 more, which puts you in the top 100% of all respondents. Well done!"

We’ve always told devs that browsers prioritize what to implement based on dev demand.

There is one exception: #SVG.

SVG is used on >65% of websites. Yet, browsers have been *refusing* to work on SVG, ignoring pressure and pain points from web devs.

#StateOfHTML showed SVG as the top content pain point: 2023.stateofhtml.com/en-US/fea

Tons of work (SVG 2, fill & stroke, and more) has sat unimplemented for years. At this point, in standards circles, we know not to touch SVG with a barge pole.

The #StateOfHTML 2023 results are finally out!

Enjoy insights from 22K responses about the state of the web platform, from HTML and interactivity to #webcomponents, PWAs, and a lot more.

This project is a monumental effort from people across the world. We even designed novel data collection UIs to gather the data we needed while minimizing friction, which I plan to write a case study about soon.

📊 State of HTML 2023 Survey Results:

> While JavaScript was taking over the web, and CSS was gaining new superpowers year over year, it could seem like HTML was content to stay dormant, happy to cede center stage to its younger siblings. After all once you've learned about <div>s and <h>s 1 through 6, what else is there to know?

Listening to the Just A Spec podcast where they mentioned that the #StateofHTML 2023 survey results still have not been posted.

I had completely forgotten about that, wonder what the delay is.

After popular demand, we decided to extend the #StateOfHTML survey until Oct 16th. 🥳

Last chance to take it, or finalize your answers if you have already taken it!

Maybe you remembered more pain points after taking it? Go back and write them in!
