Different time limits apply depending on what type of debt collection you're facing.
Credit reporting: Under federal law, most negative information can stay on your credit report for up to seven years (starting 180 days after the missed payment or other delinquency). Bankruptcies can stay on for ten years. This federal maximum applies in every state, but some states may have shorter time limits.

In Florida, most debts have either a four-year or five-year time limit. After that, if a debt collector tries to demand money without telling you it's too old to collect, they're probably breaking the law.
There's an important exception we'll talk about tomorrow.
That's the purpose of the "statute of limitations" - a time limit that debt collectors have for chasing down old debts. Because memories fade and records get lost, it's unfair to pursue debts that fall beyond that time limit.
