Just a reminder that your local #library is an F'n treasure that we probably don't appreciate enough. I hadn't gone to my local one in quite a while, and boy-howdy it's so cool. I remember when my wife and I were poor and kidless, and that was our refuge. And then we had kids, and we used it even more often.

They probably need your help more than ever.

: The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

A Series: This has been a fun change to the more real life, dystopian, surveillance books I've been reading of late. I've really enjoyed these characters.

An acclaimed modern scifi masterpiece & Hugo Award winner for Best Series! Follow a motley crew on an exciting journey through space.

The cover of the book, The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chamber. An acclaimed modern scifi masterpiece & Hugo Award winner for Best Series! Follow a motley crew on an exciting journey through space. I've really enjoyed these characters. The cover shows the title on most of the page, with a ramshackled- looking space ship traveling through space, towards a red planet in the distance.

Following Trump's executive order to dismantle the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), libraries across the United States are experiencing significant disruptions. The abrupt suspension of federal grants has forced many libraries to cut back on staff, close facilities, and suspend popular digital loan programs, particularly affecting rural and underserved communities that rely heavily on federal support.

we’re not catholic, and we actually finished this book way before easter and the whole thing with the pope and… yeah. we’re just really interested in saints! 😅 despite not being any ourselves, necessarily!

this is a very old, very dense book - and we’re not just saying that because the book did fall apart and we had to tell the library, it’s actually a very old (though somewhat-recently updated) publication! very informative when it comes to the sheer number of saints (though it by no means reflects all of them), and brief overview of the life stories of those selected. HOWEVER! VERY biased against anyone that’s not catholic, especially if they are jewish. maybe it’s a product of the original publication’s time, sure, but by no means is that a GOOD product.

saints are cool. every religion is cool. 😎✝️✡️☪️🕉️🌎 reading giant books about saints of a religion you don’t even follow/weren’t even raised in for the sheer fun of it is kinda square but, hey, i dunno. we had a good time! 😆

very powerful book, with simultaneously a very simple and very complex premise! 🐊

it’s about guns and the people who love them, as the title suggests, but it’s also actually about so much more. what is love in general? how many different ways can it be expressed? what is the purpose of faith, and what happens when faith leaders - even temporarily - eschew it? we can’t give too much away, because a lot happens in just a little time. a very quick and passionate read; it doesn’t get too heavy into the political aspects of the gun debate - unless, of course, you remember that the personal is political, and vice versa. 😉

Public are awesome!

I just signed up for a webinar from the Allen County Public Library. It's free and virtual even though I don't live anywhere near this library system.

🚨NSWF!🚨

ever seen that screenshot that says “and tonight: the author’s barely-disguised fetish”? that screenshot wasn’t made in reference to this book (it’s hard to screenshot a paperback book, to be fair), but it certainly applies to it!

or does it?

we couldn’t really tell; as very non-sexual and body-antagonistic beings ourselves, it was fascinating to see someone write about sex and the needs of a human body with such voracity. is it fetish, or is this just someone finally putting words to how the rest of the world works? why do we, of all people, get to be the ones to draw that line? all sorts of interesting questions coming up here.

it’s a very interesting piece of literature for getting to know how to be human, and see how other humans like being human. for other humans, using the restroom in front of each other is a regular, if not even sensual, occurrence. everyone’s actually incredibly aroused at all times throughout the day, and sometimes it is very specifically because of a fantasy they’ve attached to a sad look in someone else’s eyes. there’s a scene where a bunch of ladies press their ears to a drunk guy’s churning stomach, and everyone just goes “hey, when you got ladies and you got drunk guys with uneasy stomachs, that’s just what people do”, and it’s like… IS it? it’s cool if it is, don’t get us wrong, we just had no idea, lol. 🤣

outside of us not understanding (from personal experience; we get the jist of it) getting off on someone being sad or nauseous or incontinent, this is actually a very important work when it comes to conversations about censorship, specifically in books published in the U.S… though we realize we’re saying this after censoring the naked person on the cover. 😅

"Without strong , we risk losing one of the last truly nonpartisan spaces where all voices are heard. Now is the time to act — through advocacy and action. Run for your local library board; join your local Friends of the Library group. Advocate for funding at local, state, and federal levels. We must stand up for stronger libraries and a stronger democracy — one based on freedom, not fear." ~ David Leonard, BPL President

pretty cool book, though that’s coming from people that maybe don’t experience life in five senses (yet!), so take that with a grain of salt. 😉

we’re on a quest to feel more grounded in our own body, and as outsiders looking in on this author’s personal journey, there is some pretty good information in this book to help us get started on that. not that we’re just getting started. it’s been DECADES of this bullshit, lmao. 😜 so it’s not likely that one singular library book is gonna be THE THING that turns it around, but there’s also no reason why one singular library book can’t be the place to start.

not that this is the starting place. this is one of many - but, either way, it’s a good one. ☺️

John Singer Sargent: Fashion and Swagger

–John Singer Sargent is known as the greatest portrait artist of his era. What made his 'swagger' portraits remarkable was his power over his sitters, what they wore and how they were presented to the audience.

Through interviews with curators, contemporary fashionistas and style influencers, Exhibition on Screen's film will examine how Sargent's unique practice has influenced modern art, culture and fashion.

Filmed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Tate Britain, London, the exhibition reveals Sargent's power to express distinctive personalities, power dynamics and gender identities during this fascinating period of cultural reinvention. Alongside 50 paintings by Sargent sit stunning items of clothing and accessories worn by his subjects, drawing the audience into the artist's studio. Sargent's sitters were often wealthy, their clothes costly, but what happens when you turn yourself over to the hands of a great artist? The manufacture of public identity is as controversial and contested today as it was at the turn of the 20th century, but somehow Sargent's work transcends the social noise and captures an alluring truth with each brush stroke.

Step into the glittering world of fashion, scandal and shameless self-promotion that made John Singer Sargent the painter who defined an era

Explore the unique creative process of the late 19th century's favourite portrait artist and the way in which his portraits captured the spirit of a vibrant and rapidly changing age.

Another read from this month, The Year of Less was 5 ⭐️s for me.

I love to start off a new year with an inspirational nonfiction or two. This was just what I wanted. And bonus points for being a library book ❤️
