Afgelopen week werden vanuit Oekraïne westerse lange-afstandsraketten afgevuurd op doelen in Rusland. Een directe oorlogsdaad en een gigantische escalatie. Rusland reageerde met de inzet van een angstaanjagend hypersonisch wapensysteem dat de wereld nog niet eerder in actie zag.
Dit nieuwe wapensysteem is extreem gevaarlijk, omdat de zogeheten responstijd daardoor zo kort wordt. Rusland en de VS spraken om deze reden eerder af het niet te gebruiken. Maar president Trump verbrak deze afspraak en de VS is sindsdien bezig een ring rondom Rusland aan te brengen met vergelijkbare raketsystemen. Zo moet dit in 2026 onder meer in Duitsland gaan gebeuren.
Met de lancering van de Oreshnik-raket heeft Rusland laten zien a) wat een akelig wapen dit is en b) dat het in staat is om daarmee conventioneel en nucleair terug te slaan. In dat laatste geval gaat het om een kernoorlog en over de mogelijke verwoesting van grote delen van West- en Midden-Europa.
Het is de zoveelste en tot nu toe meest krachtige waarschuwing van Rusland aan het adres van het collectieve Westen: stop met ons indirect en direct aan te vallen, want vroeg of laat slaan we terug.

Of course, they live off people like Postol, Ritter, McGreggor and so on. Their extraordinary courage to give these voices a platform honors them beyond measure. Another wonderful resource for me is Redacted. My hope is that these voices for peace and common sense will never be silenced!
