📖 Tevye the Dairyman & Motl the Cantor's Son 📚
As a big fan of Fiddler on the Roof, I decided I should read the original Tevye stories. First published in 1894, Tevye 'tells' Aleichem the tales of his family, focusing on six of his seven daughters, Tzeitel, Chava, Hodel, Shprintze, Taybele, and Bielke. I was surprised by how different these tales proved to be from musical.
But the highlight here is the delightful adventures of the 'orphan' Motl in Aleichem's unfinished novel Motl and the Cantor's Son. These tales take us on the journey from poverty in the Shtetl, across Europe to the promise land of America. Motls' take on life is endearing and funny. I am amazed that these stories have never made it to film!

#ChaimTopol, the spirited Israeli actor and singer who portrayed #Tevye the milkman in #FiddlerontheRoof on stages all around the world and in an Oscar-nominated turn in Norman Jewison’s 1971 film adaptation, has died. He was 87.
Topol died Thursday in Tel Aviv after a long illness.

The film version of #FiddlerOnTheRoof was the first #musical I liked, partly because of it being grounded in gritty reality, but mostly because of #ChaimTopol's singing and humanistic portrayal of #Tevye, the kind of character I'd usually not like at all.
Like many other classics of the new #Hollywood of my childhood, Fiddler is foundational to my love of #cinema, and Chaim foundational to my appreciation of this film.
As a #Jewish kid raised with little to no Jewish friends or community, #Topol’s portrayal of #Tevye was a wonder to watch while growing up.
