The massive Confederate Soldiers Monument was erected in 1903 and occupies a prime spot on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol, towering over visitors on their right as they walk onto the grounds of the capitol from the main entrance. The inscription exemplifies the "Lost Cause" myth making that legitimized Jim Crow, lynching, and White Anglo supremacy in general.

Monuments commemorating African American and Hispanic Texans subsequently placed nearby obscure neither the Confederate monument itself nor the historical truth that racial subjugation and the spreading of falsehoods about this violent process have been central to the making of Texas today.

The image depicts a monument dedicated to the Confederate Dead. The monument is composed of a large stone base with inscriptions and five bronze statues, four of which are visible . The central statue is of Confederate States President Jefferson Davis in a long coat, standing on a pedestal with a plaque that reads "SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY" and "SOUTH CAROLINA DECEMBER TWENTIETH EIGHTEEN HUNDRED AND SIXTY." Flanking the central figure three soldiers can be seen. The base of the monument has a plaque that reads "CONFEDERATE DEAD" and includes a detailed and historically misleading inscription about the Confederate soldiers' fight for slavery and the number of engagements and casualties. The dates "1861" and "1865" are inscribed at the bottom, marking the beginning and end of the Civil War. The monument is set in the park-like area of the Texas State Capitol, with trees and greenery in the background.
