The river walls are a vital part of #London's #FloodDefences. Repeated raising of the river walls tells the story of changing river levels.

The walls preserve evidence of signs and symbols for mariners and others, of on-shore boundaries, such as parish and property markers and infrastructure, like cranes and drains.

The river wall at #Greenwich is partly built from reused masonry and a fragmentary inscription to 'Neighbours and Friends' survives - perhaps a fitting reminder to act together to protect communities at risk from #ClimateChange.

You can read more about river walls on the #Thames in this #ThamesDiscoveryProgramme blog thamesdiscovery.org/frog-blog/

Photograph of the river wall at Greenwich. Greyish brown stone blocks are draped in green plants that can grow in an intertidal environment. Some of the stones have been reused and bear the fragmentary inscription 'Neighbours and Friends'.
