Hiervor hatte ich von Robert Altman nur THE PLAYER (1992) gesehen. Ohne konkrete Erwartung hat der mich komplett damit überrascht, wie passgenau und rund das alles zusammengeknüpft wurde. Und genau so ging es mir nun hier wieder.
Ein Film Noir verdichtet zum L.A. Noir und einer von innen faulenden Stadtgesellschaft, die bereits bis zu den tiefsten Kreisen der moralischen Hölle vorgedrungen ist und nun endgültig auch noch die Hülle verrottet, die zuvor den freien Blick auf den gesamten Haufen Elend verwehrte. Eine Chance auf Rettung haben nur Menschen, die vor allem vor sich selbst ungetrübte Rechenschaft ablegen können.
Dazu Elliott Gould, der mit seinem flapsigen Zynismus hier einen wirklich interessanten Grenzgänger spielt und bei dem es wirklich ein Hochgenuss ist, zuzuschauen.
Aber mal im Ernst: Hat jemand seine Katze gesehen?

Ah, now I get it! I like both #DanaAndrews and #SterlingHayden and have actually seen ZH. It makes total sense now. Just ordered in a copy of #TheLongGoodbye ( with #ElliottGould and SH) at the library. And of course I will see him the #TheGodfather tomorrow night.

THE LONG GOODBYE, which heavily influenced my award-winning audio play "Buddies for Hire," has a recurring gag in which the same John Williams song plays over and over. It's on the soundtrack. It's Muzak. That song permeates every scene. I think I may have to steal this idea for one story I'm now honing, simply because I love the formalistic element.

It's a perfect track to end an album that really speaks to the core of my emotional landscape, and it has about two and a half minutes of tenderly feedback-drenched lead-out.
But if you buy the remaster, there are another three bonus tracks tacked onto the end, which kind of kills the mood.
(I also slightly prefer the mix of the 2000 album, probably just because I'm so intimately familiar with it. This record and I have been through shit together, friends.)
