This was incredible #TheWarGamesInColour
They’ve managed to get HD film transfers for a lot of the outdoor footage, so this the earliest HD footage we’ve had so far and the first time we’ve had a black-and-white episode in HD (and colourised)
The colourisation is quite good and combines with the 576i SD monochrome footage quite well. The World War I scenes with the military office staff felt almost like the following year’s colour season 7 early episode scenes in Spearhead from Space, and a lot of the studio scenes were reminiscent of other studio stories from that season. The glowing colours on props and electronics worked surprisingly well.
(I think the biggest clues that the cameras were “older” were the lack of variable zoom — they just moved the dollies closer to zoom in — and some vignetting; occasionally as objects fade in and out, the colourisation loses saturation prematurely).
This wasn’t at all the case when watching the original version, all 10 episodes. You wouldn’t know it came a year before the “modern” seventies colour episodes. What helped sell this, the best upgrade, is the improved editing — very wide latitude with cutting different scenes together to change the pace in a way that was never considered until editing became easier, e.g. watching people previously filmed in one location while listening to people talk in another.
But mostly I loved the new music mix, because it added on top of the existing “effects” style music where it existed (in a bit of a lonely way before), and really amped up the drama.
