Banned 400 years ago this month because the British crown really didn’t want to go to war with Spain again, and still problematic as hell today because it’s basically an anti-Catholic hate crime in the form of a stage play, this was nevertheless huge fun to perform.

The play only ran for 9 days in August 1624 - the political stuff, despite being disguised with the (arguably racist) chess allegory, was too volatile, and the censors intervened. There’s also extreme and sexual violence, but that’s normal for Jacobean drama.
