#HandEmbroidery

2025-12-23

Today's #ArtAdventCalendar is another one of the #AnimalVignettes for the #VistionOfPlacidus. I'm feeling my way towards a painterly but textural approach to stitchery, trying to keep the stitching free, slightly ruffled. I'm rather pleased with this old #Brockis, with his intent look. He will lurk in the undergrowth in a very satisfactory manner!

#HandEmbroidery #StitchedArtIsArt #Experiments

An embroidery of a badger's head using roughly tangled stitches and even some plaited stitches to create the effect of his rough fur.

Ok, embroiderers of the Fedi... I'm based in the UK, and I am looking for somewhere that sells wool for #HandEmbroidery. Not tapestry wool - crewel wool. Something like the Renaissance Dyeing Company used to produce.. Any suggestions?

An experiment for today's #ArtAdventCalendar. I was investigating an idea to used #Bargello for the border for #Placidus. I don't think I'll be using it, but it was interesting and enjoyable to do. False starts and dead ends abound in what I do!

#Needlepoint #HandEmbroidery

An experimental needlepoint of a fish seen through clear water, using the bargello technique and lots of stranded cotton.

For the #ArtAdventCalendar today, one of the #AnimalVignettes I am beginning to do in preparation for the next epic embroidery I am planning, "The Conversion of Placidus", inspired by Pisanello's "Vision of St Eustace", the Cluny Tapestries, and Elizabeth Goudge's "The Herb of Grace". It makes sense to me, I promise!

I'm feeling my way to a new way to embroider here, rather painterly and improvisational. So far, I'm pleased...!

#Kingfisher #Placidus #HandEmbroidery #Stitches

Very textural embroidery of a kingfisher on gauze, using lots of tangled crossing stitches. You can see the source photo through the gauze.

An experiment for today's #ArtAdventCalendar, a piece of gauze screenprinted with a block pattern and then embroidered and mounted so the embroidery casts a shadow. Mixed success, alas. I was hoping that the grid pattern would either show more crisply or create a half-tone, and it didn't really do either. But that's why I experiment!

#HandEmbroidery

The embroidery seems to be hovering in the air, casting a shadow. I'm not sure we would see it at all, if it weren't for the blocky pattern printed on it.

I'm struggling a bit, today, not confident in my decision-making.

The Cat Smith is such a decided character, and I'm trying to bring him to life as best I can. I've done my best, but I I'm beginning to fear that if I do more it will just disintegrate.

I put in a few highlights, but maybe the thing to do is to leave well alone until he is placed on the final panel.

For this week's #ArtAdventCalendar, in honour of the publication this year of my book "Dreams of Amarna", a sequence of Egyptological pieces..

This is my reimagining of the fragment of faience tile that inspired Mary Chubb's desire to visit Egypt, and thus started my on my embroidered response to her tales.

Three lotus flowers, "faintly lilac-tipped" as Mary Chubb describes them, seen against pale blue satin stitches that somehow look like running water.

The bird informally known as Shouty is finished. A few more rebalancing tweaks, and #StellasBirds will be complete.

This is my version of the famous head of Nefertiti, embroidered in silk and gold over a rather experimental screen print.

This one, "Loading The Felucca", honours the modern Egyptians would did the labouring, the excavation, and the carpentry, without which the scientific work of the dig would not have been the success it became.

It's finished! I'll probably blog about it tomorrow, but I just couldn't wait to share it with y'all. White silk, ecoprinted silk, ecodyed cotton thread. #handstitching #handembroidery #slowstitching

A stylized landscape of hand stitched bare trees on a background of mottled gray silk and white silk, reminiscent of a winter forest.

First, the #AmarnaFamilyGroup, in #OrNue. This was my lockdown project, inspired by a combination of boundary stelae at Amarna, and the famous throne chair found in Tutankhamun's tomb.

The bird informally known as Stabby is provisionally complete. I will need to tweak some of the colours and details to rebalance the design, but I enjoy that part. It's full of my favourite Feather Stitch variations already!

A very textural embroidery of a rather peculiar bird, part of a larger piece.

Current work in progress. Two versions of the same fabric: the white silk as it came from my stash, and the same silk after being ecoprinted with rusty metal and black tea. The embroidery floss was dyed with the same method and I'm so enjoying the way the colors harmonize. #handstitching #handembroidery #slowstitching #ecoprinting

Wearable art: a stag, hand embroidered on black upcycled linen, with tea dyed silk and soft leather, hanging on a necklace of copper, amber, and rainforest rhyolite jasper, with a hand made copper clasp. I've never created anything quite like this before and it's bringing me so much joy. #handmadejewelry #sacredart #handembroidery

"Cycles of Light and Dark" was the first piece I stitched from one of my creative prompts. This one was so simple and so satisfying! If you want to read more about it, you can check out the blog post pnwmichelle.com/2025/11/19/cyc #slowstitching #handstitching #handembroidery #paganart

"Wild Initiation": hand embroidery on thrifted green fabric (maybe cotton?) and a scrap of silk. Hand beaded fringe with brass leaves and amber from broken jewelry, and new green glass beads. He's hanging on one of my shrines. You can read more on the blog if you're curious about the story behind him. pnwmichelle.com/2025/11/26/wil #handembroidery #slowstitching #paganart #polytheistart (edited to add the link I forgot ... oops)
