Timothy George said "the visual story of Toroku is new graves and old houses" or maybe new graves and falling houses... This past weekend I didn't think to (or have time to) take many pictures of graves and pictures from previous visits are not on this computer.. But I've wanted make montages inspired by that comment for some time. These are the best I can do right now, after I've learned more GIMP. #Toroku

A montage of digital camer photos There are two photos of an old wooden building that is falling down and two photos of a grave site. The grave site has new-looking shiney stone work. The building's ceramic roof is falling down as the wooden supports beneath collapse.A montage of digital camera photos. The main photo is of another building that is falling down. But behind a new wooden screen in one of the windows is an old figure of DaiKokuTen, one of the 7 lucky gods still in a nice wooden roofed over shelf. Older photos of DaiKokuTen were added. The older photos are from a time before someone installed the wooden screen so it was easier to get direct photos of the figure. The building was the home of Tsurue Sato, a poet and victim of the local mine's arsenic pollution. She started the activism that would eventually wins some reparations for the poisoned people of the valley.

The other side of this house can be in a photo from a 2017 article from a Japanese news site.

.> The mercury poisoning “incident” in Minamata has been grandly pronounced resolved at least four times since the pollution began in 1932 and Minamata disease was officially recognized in 1956.2 In 1959 the Chisso Corporation paid compensation to fishing cooperatives and “sympathy payments” to patients that required them to renounce all future claims against the company. It did not accept responsibility for the disease. At the same time, it also installed a “Cyclator” to purify its wastewater, without announcing that the Cyclator did not remove mercury. At a ceremony at the end of 1959, Chisso’s president publicly drank a glass of water from the Cyclator, without announcing that the wastewater from the acetaldehyde plant, which contained mercury, was not being run through the Cyclator. An eerily similar performance took place on March 24, 2011 when Tokyo’s Governor Ishihara Shintarō drank a glass of tap water on national television to “prove” that it was safe from radioactive contamination.
