For #InternationalCrowAndRavenAppreciationDay I offer up this handsome cedar bark hat. A very talented friend made this for me. If you look close you can see a human face inside the Raven’s mouth. It’s an homage to my #Tlingit ancestor Anisalaga who was from the Raven Clan.

Old man wearing a woven cedar bark hat. The front of the hat sports a carved raven with its beak partly open. Inside is a carved human face peaking out.

Starting #TopChef and I love seeing the Tlingit art right on the set. It’s so cool! One of my favorite coffee mugs has a Tlingit running Raven on it.

"For Tlingit-Unangax̂ artist Nicholas Galanin, looking to the past is fundamental to constructing a more nuanced perception of the present. H[e]... 'aims to redress the widespread misappropriation of Indigenous visual culture, the impact of colonialism, as well as collective amnesia,'...

'We can sharpen our vision of the present with cultural knowledge and memory,' Galanin says."
