Dallas conservationists urge voters to think about the environment ๐Ÿฆ†

"Dallas could not exist here without the Trinity River so it's important to have a space like the Audubon Center. It's so important to have the Great Trinity Forest protected because those plants serve as sort of the first line of defense when it comes to flooding."

Day 4 backpacking the South Fork National Recreation Trail/South Fork Trinity River Trail was getting back. I took an easy day. Because. Got to poke around a bit more than on the way out and then rest for the evening.

Pair of banana slugs. You would not believe how many banana slugs on these hot days, but they know where the water is.

Big yellow slugs with dark spots sit in the dirt with pine needles resting over them. Some slime is visible off the back of the left one, which is stretched out and moving. The right is curled into a U. The dirt below is dark with moisture.National Recreation Trail crest. Slightly faded. And chewed. Probably a little melted. Rust spots from the nails. It has seen better days.

Mostly white plastic that was once a shovel blade shape, now chewed deeply from the bottom and left side. Some writing is visible. It is nailed to the slightly charred bark of a tree where it has regrown over a blaze cut into it.Looking down on a narrow part of South Fork Trinity River.

Rocks seem to float on the far edge of a deep green pool that extends from left to right. The near edge is hidden behind the steep slope the view is standing on.Foothill yellow-legged frog hiding among fallen big-leafed maple leaves.

The frog is small and grey-green in the center. The leaves are brown and crumpled and leaving a depression in the middle for the frog to sit in.

With my backpack packed for 5 days, I headed out to explore the bits and pieces of South Fork Trinity River accessible from the National Recreation Trail. I also wanted to hike the bits of the Bigfoot Trail in the area. First day was lots of miles generally high above that river with a few chunky creek crossings.

South Fork Trinity River in the Trinity portion of Shasta-Trinity National Forest, California.

A river runs right to left, but the flow is too gentle to notice the direction, with a haphazard line of white boulders spaced across it in the center. On the near side, tree trunks stretch from the steep slope to somewhere above. On the far side, green shrubs in the thin gravel and then green trees on the far slope.South Fork Trinity River in the Trinity portion of Shasta-Trinity National Forest, California.

A ribbon of water flows from somewhere lost in green conifers in the middle down to the bottom. More pointy green conifers define the canyon sides, mostly seen on the right. The left is dominated by the thick trunk of a nearby tree.Common madia with a common bee fly.

Flowers with bright yellow rays dotted with dark brown near the center and more yellow at the center are clustered near the center. Some thin, grey-green leaves and buds are visible around them. It is all a bit of a tangle. A single pollinator sits on one flower. It looks like a cross between a yellow jacket and a house fly, but it does excellent work.South Fork Trinity River in the Trinity portion of Shasta-Trinity National Forest, California.

Wide and green water flows from the horizon line toward the viewer. The flow is gentle as it goes around a line of tufted grasses. The water is edged on the left with leafy trees and conifers, and on the right with dirt slope and conifers.

Longhorn Ballroom hits play again with Asleep at the Wheel ๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿฅ๐ŸŽป๐ŸŽ™๐ŸŽน ๐ŸŽท ๐ŸŽต

The storied Dallas music venue reopened Thursday with a concert that tributed its first headliner, Bob Wills.

The venueโ€™s restoration means Dallas now has a destination rivals Fort Worthโ€™s Billy Bobโ€™s in spotlighting North Texasโ€™ remarkable and too-often-ignored music history.

[T]he Longhorn is something of an historic archive.

"It's an iconic site," said Cabaniss, "and we're in the process of getting it listed in the National Register of Historic Places."
