ok, rather than DOSbox I’ve been running #ultimaVIII through ScummVM, which additionally adds the ability to completely remap every key & furthermore, allows the enabling of a “jump to mouse position” feature (so, similar to U8PATCH.EXE).
There’s perhaps something to be said for the Avatar’s lurching movements of yesteryear (maybe jumping in full armor shouldn’t be easy; maybe the odds of clearing any such bottomless chasm should be about one in thirty) but alternatively: no.

& those expectations were probably not unwarranted?

but nevertheless, if you were, let's say, a v edgy & somewhat isolated child who had almost narily ever played a video game on personal computer & then you were met with the intro video for ultima VIII? Well, it was all over for you & you were almost certainly locked into having An Unpopular Opinion About A Video Game for the rest of your life.
