“I am all of the parts of love,” she said. “Those parts will be there, whether or not you know me. I am the heartbreak, the rush of falling, the work of maintaining. Hurting does not mean I have turned my back on you, child.”

Ale's Stones (Swedish: Ales stenar or Ale stenar) is a megalithic monument in Scania in southern Sweden. It is a stone ship, oval in outline, with the stones at each end markedly larger than the rest. It is 67 m (220 ft) long formed by 59 large boulders, weighing up to 5 tonnes each.

The carbon-14 dating system for organic remains has provided seven results at the site. One indicates that the material is around 5,500 years old, whereas the remaining six indicate a date about 1,400 years ago. The latter is considered to be the most likely time for Ales Stenar to have been created. That would place its creation towards the end of the Nordic Iron Age-

The function and purpose of Ale's stones is much disputed, and there are many different theories. It is generally believed to be a grave monument or a cult center, but another theory is that it is a sun calendar.

This is a skålgrop - a cup stone - near where I live in Högdalen a suburb of Stockholm. It is Bronze Age.

A skålgrop (in folklore also called an “älvkvarn”, or “elf mill”) is an ancient monument consisting of a hollow carved into stone. The hollows range in size from 5–10 mm in diameter up to over 300 mm in diameter. The depth varies in a similar way, from a few millimetres to more than 50 mm. In English they are called bowl pits or cup stones.

The shape of the indentations is generally round, like the hollow in an egg cup, but it can also be oval or elongated.

Although they are called carvings , bowl pits, like other rock carvings, are mostly carved with a stone . In some cases, the motifs have also been created with a chisel.

The most common interpretation of the function of the pits is that they played an important role in the various manifestations of the fertility cult for good fortune. One hypothesis is that grains were ritually ground in them, since most of them are located adjacent to ancient fields. The pits in the agricultural area are mostly located on small, flat slopes on the coastal meadows of the time near the settlements, with the focus on agricultural cultivation and livestock husbandry, so the open location is considered to have been crucial in these areas. However, this interpretation does not explain why many of the pits are very shallow, and that there are sites with large numbers of pits located on rock outcrops far beyond cultivated land and then often in, or adjacent to, ancient castles . Other uses have therefore also been suggested.

The word älvkvarn "elf mills" belongs to our older language as well as our folk beliefs , while "skålgropar" is a scientific, archaeological term that only came into being during the last century. Skålgrops stones can therefore also be called offering stones or blot stones. From the Mälaren region it is known that people used to make sacrifices in elf mills to cure diseases that were believed to be caused by fairies , mainly "elf-blown" or "elf-blown", that is, hives . Small dolls were made from, among other things, hair, nails and parts of the clothes of the sick person. These dolls were sacrificed on a skålgrops stone for three Thursday evenings in a row. In connection with this, the skålgrops were also anointed with lard, tallow or butter. Pins and coins could also be sacrificed in the skålgrops. Another mentioned sacrificial custom was to anoint the depressions with fat. A custom that is said to have extended into the 20th century.

Today, something from me
(a thread).
Valentine’s day is a day of for me, whom I venerate - or as some modern pagans like to say, whom I work with. There is also a pagan group called the Cult of Aphrodite Asteria, which has moved the ancient Feast of Eros to Valentine's Day (see text in image).

[The Cult of Aphrodite Asteria celebrates The Feast of Eros] „on
February 14, the day, when many people celebrate the now very
secularized feast of St. Valentine's. Though most people are
happily unaware of St. Valentine and his story, most understand
the celebration of love and romance that is abundant on this
day. In fact, the figure most closely associated with this holiday
in the average person's mind isn't the saint for whom it is
named, but Cupid, the Roman equivalent of Eros, Aphrodite's
son and the embodiment of erotic love.
(...)
[The Cult of Aphrodite Asteria is] using an entirely modern fes-
tival date in order to tap into the egregore that already exists in
relation to this holiday. The Athenian calendar places the Feast
of Eros in the month of Mounikhion, which is roughly
April/May, depending on the exact date.“

#ValentinesDay has roots in the ancient #Roman #pagan festival of #Lupercalia, celebrated around February 15.

Lupercalia honored fertility gods like Faunus, Lupercus, and Juno, involving rituals at the Lupercal cave where Romulus and Remus were nursed by a she-wolf. Priests called Luperci sacrificed goats and a dog, smearing blood on young men's foreheads before they ran naked through Rome, whipping women with bloodied thongs to promote fertility and easy childbirth.

I originally did this series of Celtic Gpddesses well over a year ago. I've improved a lot since then so I've decided to redraw them. Starting with Cliodhna, Celtic goddess of the sea (ergo water)

TITLE: Going to Sacred Space/Between the Worlds

URL: angelaraincatcher.substack.com

Hello, lovelies!

I have been laid low this week with a particularly rough head cold lots of sleeping, liquids, and bingeing Schitt’s Creek for the umpteenth time. Thankfully, I was able to get a bunch of stuff done to prepare for going to the Sacred Space/Between the Worlds joint conference before getting sick.

I will be facilitating a conversation and ritual on Thursday, February 19, at 4:00pm, titled “Coins for the Dead.” I’m very excited that Ron Padrn from White Rose Witching and Jess Shoemaker, Death Midwife, will be joining me to help in this ritual to journey to the shores of the river of tears that separates the land of the embodied from the Otherworld and engage in the psychopomp work of helping those souls who are unable to cross over on their own. Experienced practitioners and those new to the work are welcome.

Your Magick Aunties will also be in the vendors’ room all weekend with a variety of artwork and sacred craft to enliven your practice. I will also be launching my Kickstarter campaign for The Well of Mimir Rune Cards! This is a project I have been working on-and-off on for the past couple of years, and I’m thrilled to have it out in the world soon. Before the campaign, you can subscribe to be notified on February 19 when it launches. Rewards will include the 24-card deck with booklet, a hand-made draw-string bag, and sticker sheets!

Well of Mimir Rune Cards, draw-string bag, and sticker sheets

But, as I mentioned at the beginning, what is most important to me to renewing my connections with people in my community. I have been attending this conference since the early 2000s, and these are my people. We have learned together, laughed together, circled together, and cried together. I look forward to seeing people I haven’t seen for a while, getting to spend time sharing conversation with them, and learning what they have been up to.

Beyond the great rituals and classes (and there are quite a few!), this conference grounds me in community. It reminds me of what we can do when we work together, and it shines as a beacon of what polytheism can bring to the world people from different paths, worshipping different gods, sharing sacred space and learning from each other in peace.

Blessings from a strong and open heart,

Angela Raincatcher

I had so much fun writing these stories and painting the illustrations for them! Each myth in this collection has a full-page color illustration to go with it, in the Minoan art style. From the Blessing of the Ships to the Mysteries to the Blooming Time, these tales navigate the cosmos and the wheel of the year from the perspective of inclusive Minoan spirituality. Details, table of contents, and sample illustrations here: lauraperryauthor.com/tales-fro As usual, plenty of places to find it that aren't named after a South American River.

The book cover features the Minoan Snake Goddess and a labyrinth design. Text above the book cover reads, "Ariadne knew that she must leave the Underworld as a natural part of the cycle. She would return to the World Above for the season, rising up with the first green sprouts in the fields." At the bottom of the graphic is the URL LauraPerryAuthor.com.
