Our First Nations brothers and Sisters have taken a break from social media to mourn the failure of the Voice Referendum. So I'll put in my opinion.
I have heard some reluctant Yes voters and the progressive No say that the voice was a compromise and a way to make white people feel good about themselves. I think it was an offramp.
The Voice was a way to recognise that the past was bad but then quickly move forward. The Yes campaign's focus on the future reflected that.
But they were too optimistic about how much Truth, Australians knew or cared. Too many Australians were not ready to face our history. As the campaign went on Yes was pulled into talking more Truth and was then called a divisive and dredging up history.
I have news for No Voters we are a divided country and always have been.
Going forward we will see a commitment to vicious Truth telling until the myths Australians tell themselves are shattered and the full wieght of the sins of the past are laid bare.
There is a reason the Uluru Statement was Truth Treaty Voice in that order and we have to go back to Truth.
