I’ve uploaded an old booklet I bought it in the 1980s for 25 pence, ‘Paper-Folding for Schools’, published By Charles And Son Ltd, at archive.org/details/paper-fold.

Without mentioning it, the contents draw on the Froebel kindergarten tradition of paperfolding, but the folding of circular paper is an unusual addition.

You can find more information about Froebelian Paperfolding and Additional Occupations at origamiheaven.com/historyindex

The booklet has no date, no author(s) and no table of contents. This could be the second, or more likely, the fifth edition (1929) of ‘Paper Folding for Schools’ by M Hopkins, including a series of lessons on paper-folding from the circle, by Lilian Elliott.

Contents:
The aim and value of paper folding
Preliminary talk on the unfolded square
The first folds
Objects made from two squares of paper
Corner folds on square
Ground form—the large envelope or letter
Ground form—the small letter or envelope
Ground form—the houseboat
Ground form—the boat
Ground form—the boat with the sail
Ground form—the boat with the box for fish
Ground form—picture frame
Simple objects from the oblong
Paper-folding from the circle
Objects made from the fourfold plan
Segment folds between the diameter

I got back from a lovely trip to the Crystal Coast in North Carolina. We stopped for a day in Richmond, VA, on the way down.

While there, we stopped at Bargain Books Richmond and I got a bunch of cool books. I could have stayed there for hours and gotten way more books. I found a binder filled with accessory patterns. I love how this creator shot the final project: with a cameo by her cat. I also spotted one of @grammargirl books in the writing section. 🧶 #knitting #usedbook #bookstore

Knitting pattern for a shawl called "A Girl's Best Friend." The pattern is for a bridal shawl designed by Karen Joan Raz. A large photo shows a triangular white lacy shawl laid out on a reddish-brown shag carpet. A Siamese cat stands next to the shawl, inviting the viewer to admire its grace and beauty.A beige metal bookshelf is filled with used books about writing, including Chicago Manual of Style: 16th Edition and Mignon Fogarty's Ultimate Writing Guide for Students.

THE MEANING OF STAR TREK (New York: Doubleday, 1997) by Thomas Richards.

Last Thursday, I did a Mad Science show at the Upper Moreland Free Public Library (Willow Grove, PA). Because of the extended break between shows, I arrived pretty early. So, I spent the bonus time by taking a walk through the air conditioned library and, more importantly, perusing their section of used books for sale...

I made an interesting thrift store purchase this weekend. The book's copyright date is 1970. It has a Library of Congress card number, but no ISBN number or UPC code printed on the cover.

It has an old book/used bookstore smell and the promise of creative inspiration.

Just went to a #usedbook store for the first time in years. Tried to sell off a bunch of older books from my library to get credit so my oldest kid could buy more Cat Warriors books. It didn’t work out so well financially — the trade in for my books was low and even then the shop only wanted maybe 20 books out of six full boxes. The used books we bought were much more expensive than expected, about $130 for a stack of 14.

I’d hoped the store credit might cover the books, but not even close.

This Saturday, while visiting with my in-laws in Hadley, MA, we got to spend some time at Grey Matter Books. It's one of those used bookstore archetypes that I love: a shop that appears fairly small at first but which expands shelf to shelf, room to room, and every room holds new treasures.

I ended up getting Arrival by Chiang, an annotated guide to fairy tales, and a noir mystery collection.

The Horror Section was indicated by this clever sign.

Several piles of horror paperbacks, mainly by Stephen King, John Saul, and others are staked in front of a white concrete wall. A printed sign says, "Oh, the HORROR."

Loot from the #UsedBook sale at my local #library.

#TheForeverWar by Joe Haldeman

#FuzzyNation by John Scalzi

#ADarklingSea by James L. Cambias

3 Fantasy books by #MercedesLackey, who I've never read, but my wife recommends

2 Fantasy books by #SMSterling that I got because he thanked #RobertChambers and #TheKingInYellow in the acknowledgements.

Queen of Populists by Richard Stiller

A 1939 "Poetry and Prose for Enjoyment" collection and a Spanish-English dictionary.

Barbara Walters just died today at 93 years old nbcnews.com/news/us-news/barba

I didn’t actually know who she was when I picked up this book at our local used book sale a few months ago. I bought it because I liked the title and thought that owning a book from 1970 was kind of cool

How to talk with practically anybody about practically anything - by Barbara Walters, published in 1970

Today’s #usedbook haul. I got the Fish as a complement to my Wolfgang Iser material and this is my first time taking a look at Basbanes, but I like Manguel and Bloom and it feels like it may be in that area. Very close to a complete Barthes!

@openculture

Always dangerous when I go to my mechanic's (as just happened now) as it is close to my favorite store.. I stop in "just to browse" and end up with an armload...
