May 7th Is World Wide Day of Genital Autonomy.

A day to raise awareness of a human right that is frequently violated in the western world through male circumcision and intersex 'normalization' surgeries. Also, while no longer widely practiced there are still over 500 thousand victims of FGM in the US with extremely few avenues for support since their battle is often thought as 'won'. There's similar disenfranchisement of the grief of everyone who has experienced child genital cutting including an *incorrect* association with the manosphere/faschosphere.

I host two explicitly intersectional support groups on discord, one for the intersection (violated) genital autonomy and trans, intersex, and gender diverse peoples. I also host a support group for other marginalized allies in the same vein. You can access these at our work in progress website. It's currently at 19 PT on Tuesdays.

May 7th is Worldwide Day of Genital Autonomy: Genital autonomy should be a basic human right, but it’s all too often infringed upon, such as with routine circumcision. On Worldwide Day of Genital Autonomy, we recognize this and advocate for change. More info: genital-autonomy.de (not affiliated with the website, I just agree with their message and recommend their resources as a starting point)Circumcision Isn't Harmless: Approximately 50% of penile skin is removed during a routine infant circumcision. This includes the most nerve-dense and sensitive areas. Not only can there be many physical complications during the surgery and in recovery, but the psychological affects are also heavily under-studied. Many people who had the surgery done to them as a baby report feeling mutilated and that it was a violation of consent.Consent is Key: The pre-emptive removal of tissue is something very rarely found in medicine outside of genital cutting, such as circumcision. Only around 1 in 200 intact individuals end up having foreskin-related complications, and most of those only occur around puberty. Even when complications do occur, they can almost always be solved without circumcision. It should be a no-brainer to wait until something goes wrong to remove an entire body part, or at least wait until the individual can make that decision for themselves.Why Not Wait? Everyone deserves the right to bodily autonomy. Making a decision to remove part of a child’s body before they are able to have any input violates that right. Many of the few benefits of circumcision are related to cleanliness when it comes to sexual health. When a child is born, you shouldn’t need to worry about STIs. Waiting until they are old enough to make an informed decision about their own body just makes sense.
