Minnetonka Center for the Arts Is a Vibrant Hub for Older Adults

Before or after retirement, one never knows if another work opportunity is around the bend. Take Frank Picos for example. He enrolled in classes, including stone carving, at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts (MCFTA). He developed such skill and passion for the medium that, as a retiree from a career in supply chain and construction, he now serves as the center’s stone carving instructor.

“The community has been great, and I was lucky enough to connect with other instructors and other artists [who] were encouraging me and getting me to take it to another level,” Picos says. “Learning how to learn and learning how to teach and present information was a big part of that process.”

50 years of local skating: Silver Skates Ice Revue

If one person has been a fixture at every single Silver Skates Ice Revue for the last 50 years, it’s Carol Timm.

The skating school director and head coach of the Lake Minnetonka Figure Skating Club and Minnetonka All Season Skating School may have been director since 1979, but she has been at the school since 1974, the year of its inception.

In her skating tenure, she has been through many different types of shows from Sesame Street, Disney, music from divas like Whitney Houston, boyband-inspired pieces and more. She has taught skaters from all over the metro area, including Minnetonka, Wayzata, Chanhassen, Eden Prairie, Plymouth, Maple Grove and more. She has also seen a lot of successful skaters move on from their school, including names like Olympian Jill Trenary, who won fourth place at the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, and Gig Siruno, who has won U.S. national titles in compulsory figures for men, and now skates professionally for Disney on Ice.
