Garage condos coming to Orono for luxury vehicles
Orono is about to become the latest Twin Cities suburb to give vehicle owners space for the things that don’t fit in a traditional garage or yard.
Orono Garage Condos LLC, based in Excelsior, has paid $2.54 million to Old Crystal Bay LLC in Long Lake for a 5-acre location at 430 Old Crystal Bay Road N. It will have five buildings with 85 condos ranging from 800 to 1,400 square feet. Prices for a basic shell will start in the mid-$200,000s, with no real limit on how they can be tricked out to pamper a Porsche or Ferrari — perhaps from the nearby cluster of luxury dealerships along Interstate 394. They also are designed for watercraft and other recreational equipment.

Excelsior goes green with Arbor Day tree planting celebration
In celebration of Arbor Day on April 25 and Arbor Month throughout the month of May, the city of Excelsior partnered with Minnesota non-profit organization, Tree Trust for a tree planting event, May 17.
Held at United Methodist Church in Excelsior, members of the Tree Trust alongside Excelsior’s Parks and Natural Resources Manager Kevin Quinn provided a tree planting demonstration to teach attendees of all ages the healthiest way to plant a tree. Specifically, how to know if the hole in the ground is big enough for the tree, how to prepare the tree’s roots for proper growth, and how to provide the best area for the tree.
Ten trees of different species were provided to be planted by attendees in other areas of the church’s property, including white pine and oak trees.

Minnesota Orchestra to grace Excelsior Commons stage after 13-year hiatus
The Minnesota Orchestra is set to return to the Excelsior Commons for the first time in over a decade to present a free outdoor concert 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 1. This performance, featuring a blend of classical and popular music, is part of the Orchestra’s annual Symphony for the Cities tour and is hosted by Fanfare for The Commons, a nonprofit organization dedicated to Minnesota Orchestra events at the Excelsior Commons.
Festivities will begin at 5 p.m., when attendees will be welcomed by Twin Cities musicians performing short sets of choral and instrumental music. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy an evening of food, drink and music.

Excelsior Rotary Club announces 2 Lee Paris Grant recipients
The Excelsior noon Rotary Club has announced two more Lee Paris Grant recipients. In honor of former President Lee Paris and in support of community causes, the club has gifted the grants to the Lake Minnetonka Historical Society and the Excelsior Fire District.
As a organization that collects, preserves, and shares the history of the Lake Minnetonka area, The Lake Minnetonka Historical Society has received the grant of $5,000 for its work in keeping alive the history of the local Lake Minnetonka communities.
In honor of 100 years of service, the Excelsior Fire District a $15,000 grant to go to preserving and showcasing the records and artifacts of the Fire Department’s history in a display case to be built at the Fire Department’s offices.

Coming soon to Excelsior: Steakhouse with popovers, noodle bar with dumplings
The team behind Parlour will unveil two new restaurants on downtown Excelsior’s Water Street this summer.
Last year, Jester Concepts promised to bring two brand new concepts to the main-level of the building that houses Parlour in 2025. Now, details of those plans have been revealed.
Shiki, a 630-square-foot noodle bar open daily for lunch and dinner, will focus on dumplings and ramen, according to the announcement.
Jester Concepts said the 30-seat restaurant will bring an “electric, late-night vibe” and feature an open kitchen so guests can watch the chefs and bartenders craft dishes and cocktails.
Mirabelle, which will serve nightly dinner and weekend brunch, is expected to open a few weeks after Shiki this summer.
The 2,700-square-foot American restaurant will focus on steaks and seafood, pastas and salads and side dishes such as classic popovers. The proposed three-story development received feedback from the Excelsior Heritage Preservation Commission on Tuesday. Wells was the inventor of the routing machine — a lateral revolving cutting tool — which he used to produce the first machine cut wood types in the United States. His first workshop was at 161 Broadway (behind George Long’s book store). He published the first wood type specimen catalog in 1828. The company became D. Wells & Co in 1835, then Wells & Webb when he partnered with E.R. Webb in 1839. Wells retired from wood type manufacturing in 1856.
Wells was also an active abolitionist, and helped run a “station” on the underground railroad in Patterson, NJ helping enslaved humans make their way north to Canada to live as free human beings. Mr. Wells served as Postmaster of Paterson 1861–1874 appointed by Abraham Lincoln.
