I am a US citizen and wish to volunteer abroad. But let me preface by saying that I have never been a volunteer. I am hoping to use this as a self-building sort of experience. I have never been passionate about anything really in life. I drifted through high-school and didn't go to college. Lately I am realizing how incredibly lazy I am. I will become hyper focused on something but only for a few days or maybe weeks and then become so bored of it. I feel that maybe I lack purpose in life? So I'd like to become a volunteer somewhere in the world.

What is white saviourism?

White saviourism describes an ideology whereby a white person or a group of white people feel called upon to “save” BIPOC persons, or nations in the global south, through development, educational or aid work. According to the organisation @nowhitesaviors it can be described as a “symptom of racism & white supremacy which places those in a position of privilege into the role of savior over those who have been historically oppressed and exploited”. Initially, the author Teju Cole introduced the term White-Savior Industrial Complex in 2012. He describes that white saviourism “is not about justice. It is about having a big emotional experience that validates privilege”.

I've been trying to use my #whiteprivilege for good, but a Black friend recently helped me to reframe it. It's not my white privilege I use to help. That's just #whitesaviorism with new words. It's my #empathy I should be using. It's always just been empathy.
