My 600 drawing project.

600 drawings is the result of a drawing project — making at least one drawing each day. This project involved the use of four-inch squares of paper of various weights, colors, and surfaces. Year-long projects help expand my vocabulary, they create new phrases and expletives.
My year-long projects start with setting parameters. In this case I chose to limit myself to supplies I had in the studio. I began by opening my flat files drawers that hold torn and trimmed remnants of larger sheets of paper. It’s amazing how many pieces I found there. I discovered that many small pieces could be cut out of these remnants.
My decision kept the cost of producing the work close to zero. That savings would focus resources to make the work available to a larger audience.
I signed, numbered, and named all 600 drawings. I made a catalog for documentation of the project in print.

My work explores the concept of emergent properties – how complex systems arise from simple interactions. I am fascinated by the patterns that emerge from repetition and subtle variation.

An abstract drawing produced by a robotic pen plotter using a generative algorithm. Thousands of graphite pencil strokes produce a flowing, organic form on cream colored paper.

𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, 𝘛𝘰 𝘉𝘦 𝘛𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 is a series of drawings created with a plotter. The plotter follows instructions produced by a generative algorithm that creates a unique output each time it runs.

Multiple sine wave oscillation functions, combined with procedurally generated noise, alter the size and orientation of 2,052 straight line segments.

Soft curves emerge from hard edges.

Multiple sine wave oscillation functions, combined with procedurally generated noise, alter the size and orientation of hundreds of paint strokes, using one of seven color palettes.
