As we were coming to the end of our time in Ghent and were crossing one of the many bridges over the canals on the way back to our bus we heard a high buzzing noise and came across a couple in wedding outfits being filmed by a drone. Whether they were actually a couple or whether they were simply being filmed for promotional material, we couldn't say.

The photo shows a boy called Issam, a sculpture in the Skam Museum in Ghent. It is a refugee child, leaning its head against the wall and covering its eyes like in the children's game where you count and then look for your friends who are hiding. To the left is a black block the size of a stool.

Gravensteen is a twelfth century castle in the city of Ghent, Belgium, and we like castles so we had to visit it during our trip there in early 2017. From the top you get a great view over the city skyline and if you're a fan of churches and their towers then Ghent won't disappoint you.

A view from a high building in the centre of a European city with a medieval history. It's an overcast day and there's a feeling that there's been rain in the recent past given the damp look to the buildings we can see. We're looking over the tops of roofs of four and five storey buildings, many with very tall, steep roofs, some with stepped gables typical of northern European countries. Four church towers are spaced across the city's skyline, two with clock faces on them.

Prior to 2017 we'd only cruised with Princess but then we realised that P&O UK cruises also counted towards building up Princess loyalty points (they don't any longer) and we could sail more frequently to boost our rewards with short trips from along the coast in Southampton. Our first P&O cruise was on Azura for a weekend to Belgium. Azura was the same class of ship as three of those with Princess we'd cruised on so was immediately familiar, although we found the British rather than international feel not quite as holiday-like.

Despite the proximity we'd never been to Belgium before and we chose to head off to Gent (or Ghent) rather than the more popular Brugge (or Bruges). Canals, medieval buildings, a castle, churches, terrible street art, and of course we stopped for some drinks in a bar by the water too.

A bright, sunny, warm day with patchy white clouds in a deep blue sky overhead. We're standing on a low bridge over a wide canal running through the centre of a city with plenty of three-storey buildings along the water's edge, some of them clearly old and with a typically northern European style of stepped gable on the facade. Tour boats and narrow boats are tied up along both walls of the canal and those and the buildings reflect brightly on the rippled surface of the water. A wide, flat barge is in the foreground with some people on its littered deck apparently about to tie up next to another boat by a set of steps.

If you saw an Asian woman eating a big pot of #mussels #moulesfrites on a front patio in #Gent today, that was me. I no doubt paid too much for it, but I didn't have much of a breakfast, I had a great view of the passing horse carriages & the weather was fabulous.
