You know what I love about Mastodon? The userbase is genuinely so much more kind and respectful than #xitter or even #bluesky, for example. X was a cesspool of toxicity even before it was bought by Musk, but now it isn’t any better either. Bluesky is somewhat similar (since it’s getting a little mainstream nowadays), although not as bad. But Mastodon truly is the sanctuary I’ve been looking for. I hope this never changes.

The future really is federated. ❤️🐘

@peppenamir Le ondate migratorie da #Xitter sono ferme da un po' (forse chi voleva mollarlo lo ha lasciato subito e chi è restato se lo fa andar bene).
Una alternativa come #Bluesky ha preso piede e si è presa una parte di utenza.
Sono contento che questo progetto vada avanti ormai da anni.

Just got an email from #apple about podcasts with links to their #xitter, #TikTok and #facebook accounts. Seems so weak.

Why don't these other big tech players try to take down their competitors by promoting #ActivityPub? It would cost them nothing. Run a server etc. Promote it in their other products. Fund development just a little. They don't need to win, just weaken the other guys.

I was told to be happy that #bluesky now exists cause it would provide a realistic option to get people off #xitter (and I agree we need to kill that propaganda machine).

But I'm a fan of the smart and honest dissidents and they are definitely not welcomed on bluesky. AFAICT bluesky is now reliant on early users who only want to hear from people who agree with themselves. And apparently are allowed to bother those who don't till they leave.

I guess we needed their bad example to get better.

Yes don't use #xitter. It's a biased platform intended to manipulate. Mostly thanks to the algos but also cause they don't police abuse that tends to silence views Elon doesn't like. But on #bluesky, we're seeing abuse in the other direction.

Yes social media actually breaks info bubbles, but only if it's designed that way. Old Twitter vs the closed community focus of group apps or family and friends on FB.

I think that's definitely part of it, but unfortunately (and I'm only hazarding a guess since I'm not on BS, and barely on here anymore) I'm also of the opinion that a lot of "bigger" accounts miss the Internet points that #xitter offers up (a LOT of which comes—directly and indirectly—from bot accounts/trolls).

So even people who aren't outright Nazis will stay/go back to #twitter because they want the "engagement" numbers...and because #clout is a helluva drug.

If #xitter didn't have an algo or trending etc, you'd only see posts from the people you follow. would it be that bad?

Yes, they'd still have lots of rightwing assholes bothering people till that's all that was there.

Ok, so add lots of mods to stop anybody from bothering others. Are we good?

No, they could still control access so that it was mostly just journalists and conservatives, influencing the public conversation rightward.
