Afropop star Yemi Alade (Yemi Eberechi Alade) has shared why she stopped smoking. She said the habit began in university and soon felt unsafe.
She spoke during a new interview with media host Chude Jideonwo. The singer said she first tried cigarettes at night on campus. See Tiwa Savage interview.
Campus habit grew fast
According to Alade, the trial stage did not stay casual. She soon noticed she needed a stick before bed. That was when she saw the habit gaining ground.
She also felt uneasy smoking in public places Nigerian stars visit. She would hide the cigarette from people around her. For her, a habit that needs hiding is not worth it.
Alade said she loved to stay alert around friends and fans. Cigarettes, she added, made that sense of control harder. She chose to cut the habit instead of living in secret.
Voice health made her stop
The singer further linked smoking to her voice problems at the time. She noticed her tone was not as clear on some days. She said that was risky for a young performer.
She stressed that her voice is her work tool and must stay strong. This is why she listened to the early warning signs. Read Omah Lay’s Afrobeats talk.
Alade said, “I was getting addicted to that lifestyle.” The craving came mostly at night.
She added that the phase did not reach one full year. She stopped once she saw her voice and image at risk. She has not looked back since then.
