Where you can (and can't) use Emoji in PHP
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2024/04/where-you-can-and-cant-use-emoji-in-php/
I was noodling around in PHP the other day and discovered that this works:
<?php$๐ = "bread";echo "Some delicious " . $๐;I mean, there's no reason why it shouldn't work. An emoji is just a Unicode character (OK, not just a character - but we'll get on to that), so it should be fine to use anywhere.
Emoji work perfectly well as function names:
function ๐บ๐ถ() { echo "catdog!";}๐บ๐ถ();Definitions:
define( "โ", "huh?" );echo โ;And, well, pretty much everywhere:
class ๐ฆ{ public int $๐ฆ; public ?string $๐ฆ; public function __construct(int $๐ฆ, ?string $๐ฆ) { $this->๐ฆ = $๐ฆ; $this->๐ฆ = $๐ฆ; }}$๐ = new ๐ฆ(1234, "birb");echo $๐->๐ฆ;How about namespaces? Yup!
namespace ๐;class ๐ { public function ๐() { echo "Wink!"; }}use ๐\๐;$๐ = new ๐();$๐->๐();Even moderately complex Unicode sequences work:
echo <<<๐ณ๏ธโ๐Unicode is magic!๐ณ๏ธโ๐;I've written before about the Quirks and Limitations of Emoji Flags. The humble ๐ณ๏ธโ๐ is actually the sequence U+1F3F3 (white flag), U+FE0F (Variation Selector 16), U+200D (Zero Width Joiner), U+1F308 (Rainbow).
Take a complex emoji like "Female Astronaut with Medium Dark Skin Tone" - ๐ง๐พโ๐ - that also works!
$๐ง๐พโ๐ = 1;$๐ท๐ปโโ๏ธ = 2;echo $๐ง๐พโ๐ + $๐ท๐ปโโ๏ธ;Probable the most complex emoji has 10 different codepoints! It looks like this - ๐ง๐พโโค๏ธโ๐โ๐ง๐ป
And it works!
$๐ง๐พโโค๏ธโ๐โ๐ง๐ป = "Kiss Kiss. Bang Bang!";echo $๐ง๐พโโค๏ธโ๐โ๐ง๐ป[-1];There are some emoji which don't work;
$5๏ธโฃ = "five";The 5๏ธโฃ emoji is U+0035 (Digit Five), U+FE0F (Variation Selector 16), U+20E3 (Combining Enclosing Keycap). PHP doesn't allow variables to start with digits, so it craps out with PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected integer "5", expecting variable or "{" or "$" in php shell code on line 1
You also can't use "punctuation" emoji as though they were normal characters:
echo 5 โ= 6;And, while not strictly emoji, you can't use mathematical symbols:
echo 5 โค 6;So, there you have it. Is this useful? Well, probably. It is easy to get lost in a sea of text - so little pictograms can make it easier to see what you're doing. If the basic ASCII characters aren't part of your native language, perhaps it is useful to make use of the full range of Unicode.
Does your favourite programming language support Emoji?

Been thinking about Ursula K. Le Guinโs โThe Carrier Bag Theory of Fictionโ a lot (again) recently.
Tonight, I came across Jeremy Keithโs journal post โDecision timeโ and instantly thought, โYes, and I wonder if heโs read that essayโฆโ I was going to recommend it, but wanted to read it again first to double-check that it is as relevant as Iโฆ
I usually go and buy a new computing device once every 6 years or so. This year my trusty Late 2017 Apple MacBook Pro i5 8GB/500GB is officially sunsetted. While Iโve been eyeing a new Macbook to take its place, it would be one of the newer Apple Silicon M2 joints. But I really want to jump back into doing all my computing in Linux full time and also game more soโฆ Iโm taking a chance here.
Iโve always dreamed of a modular laptop since itโs kind of the only way I can get the specs and ports I want. Framework makes it possible by having this form factor that should never be obsolete; all the parts are user serviceable and replaceable including the motherboard, ports, screen, keyboard, and so on.
My config is the 16 inch Ryzenโข 9 7940HS โ Radeonโข RX 7700S โ 180W. Thatโs right, thereโs a kick-ass discreet graphics card in there and itโs user swappable! Whenever the new hotness comes along, or other modules like an extra battery or whatever is needed, its a simple 10 minute swap out needing only a screwdriver (which is also included).
The bad news: I gotta wait until Spring 2024. The good news, I can save up the rest of the money by Spring 2024โ this thing IS NOT cheap; about $1000 more than my current Mac was when I bought it new in 2017. BUT it will basically become the workhorse PC as I plan on using it for work, home-labbing, and gaming. Any tool you use to make your livelihood off of should have no expense spared (within reason.)

When do symbols stop being political?
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2020/01/when-do-symbols-stop-being-political/
I am a civil servant in the UK - this is my personal blog. As part of my job, I have to follow the Civil Service Code which, among other things, says I'm not allowed to be political at work.
Political Impartiality
You must:
- serve the government ... no matter what your own political beliefs are
- comply with any restrictions that have been laid down on your political activities
You must not:
- act in a way that is determined by party political considerations
- allow your personal political views to determine any advice you give or your actions.
That's probably a good thing. I should execute my duties without regard to my personal political feelings. If an elected official asks me to do something, I shouldn't refuse or undermine them if I voted for a different party.
If I turned up to work wearing a t-shirt saying "Vote for the Whig Party!" I'd probably be sent home.
But what if I wore a badge which said "Votes For Women" and displayed the suffragette colours? Now that women have the vote, is the symbol still political?
Well, the suffragette flag has done a tour of civil service buildings - and senior staff have happily posed with it.

The #suffrageflagrelay has now finished. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, cheered us on and joined in via twitter. Undoubtedly there are probably still a few people who think extending the vote to women was a bad idea and should be rescinded. But that is so far outside of the mainstream that I don't think a complaint would be upheld.
What about other political symbols?
I'm proud to wear a rainbow lanyard at work. It is a sign off allyship with my LGBT+ colleagues (other acronyms are available). It is a visible sign that as an employer - and as an individual - we will stand up for equal rights, and tackle homophobia and transphobia.

Is that a political symbol?
The USA banned the flying of rainbow flags from its embassies. Some modern political candidates can be quite open in their desire to roll back equal rights. It is a political symbol, right?

A quick conversation with some of my gay and bi friends found a split opinion. "Pride is a riot - and the rainbow flag is a symbol of political protest" said one. Someone else thought it was so mainstream due to rainbow-washing (where companies use Pride as a marketing tool) that it was meaningless.
Another pointed out this part of the Civil Service Code:
You must carry out your responsibilities in a way that is fair, just and equitable and reflects the Civil Service commitment to equality and diversity
(Emphasis added)
Equality is a political position. But it is one which is (fairly) mainstream and thus has the appearance of neutrality.
But nothing is truly neutral.
My personal political views on universal suffrage and gay rights may happen to be reasonably mainstream, but I've chatted with people at work who are uncomfortable wearing a rainbow. Some because they think people will think they're gay, some because it might be seen as appropriation, and some because they don't believe in the cause behind it.
Thankfully the latter are rare.
But it doesn't escape my mind that symbols have meanings, and nothing is truly neutral.
