The steep slopes of the Cevennes valleys are home to some last trunk-apiaries or , a testimony to a centuries-old beekeeping tradition. Made from the hollowed-out trunks of chestnut trees and covered with a shale slate, these hives are sometimes still home to a rustic black honeybee variety that produces a thick and characteristic honey, used primarily for domestic consumption.

#Droplet Digital RT-PCR (dd RT-PCR) #Detection of #SARS-CoV-2 in #Honey #Bees and Honey Collected in #Apiaries across the #Campania Region, Viruses: mdpi.com/1999-4915/16/5/729

The screening revealed the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in 12/91 in honey bee samples and in 2/6 honey samples. These results suggest that honey bees could also be used as indicators of outbreaks of airborne pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2.
