I tried out #avorion yesterday. It has a bit of a learning curve, but it sure is addictive. It has first-class Linux support and runs great on my aging laptop with integrated Intel graphics!

Think Endless Sky + Freelancer + Minecraft. Not open source, but hey, you can't have everything.
