Van Halen didn't really need a breath of fresh air but they got it anyway. I've never understood those adamant that you must pick a side - I prefer the Roth albums overall (to be fair, quantity alone can drive that) but am a staunch Hagar fan as well ... seriously, take some time and dive into his phenomenal discography.

I often wonder where Roth-VH was headed on the heels of the turn they took with 1984 but when all is said and done, these two gems more than quenched the thirst. And yes, VH and VHII are b2b HOF'ers as well (natch).

Textbook pop-funky, feelgood music. Really hard to classify The Tubes - one of those bands that just never fit neatly into any boxes. And give a listen to 1985's Love Bomb album - not nearly the ear candy of these two, but a completely different animal and a real favorite of mine.

Pre-Escape Journey is so vastly underrated. Also, if you love the Greg Rolie years as much as I do, check out Neal Schon's one-off 'Journey Through Time' concert from 2018 (Rolie actually in the lineup) ... it's fantastic and even covers music from their initial prog rock albums from waaaayyy back.
