🌏 Fire-tufted Barbet (Psilopogon pyrolophus)

The Fire-tufted Barbet is a moderately large, predominantly green bird, noted for the fiery orange tuft of feathers above the male's bill and a yellow and black "necklace" on its throat. Distributed in the montane forests of Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra, it typically forages in the high canopy, feeding on figs, other fruits, and arthropods. Its distinctive call is an unusual cicada-like buzzing. No subspecies are recognised. 2.5 Flash (Edited)

Fun fact: Like many barbets, its diet is mostly frugivorous (fruit-eating), and it has a particular fondness for figs. This makes it an important agent for seed dispersal in its forest habitat.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

🌏 Red-throated barbet (Psilopogon mystacophanos)

The red-throated barbet is a vibrant Asian barbet, predominantly green with a stout bill. Medium-sized birds, males have a striking red throat and crown, a black face mask, and yellow and blue markings. Females are duller, lacking most of the male's facial colours. Found in lowland forests and swamps of Southeast Asia, they are often heard before being seen, with loud, repetitive calls. Primarily frugivorous, red-throated barbets are usually solitary or in pairs and nest in tree cavities.

Conservation status: Near Threatened (IUCN 3.1)

Red-throated barbet (Psilopogon mystacophanos). Juvenile male. Distribution: Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Singapore. Conservation status: Near Threatened. CC: HAKI πŸ“·: Photo by Erik_Karits via Pixabay 2022

The photo shows a juvenile male, which looks very similar to the female. They both lack the red throat patch that distinguishes adult males. Their plumage is mainly green with some blue near the eyes and a black spot above each eye.
