Less than a day before the council meeting, the report on the changes meant to be voted on was withdrawn from the agenda.

Just got the Go Victoria newsletter. In the 1970s and 1980s the @victoria.ca created beautiful 24/7 School Streets, like the ones at George Jay and Quadra elementary schools. Why, in 2025, is the City not welcoming proposals for 24/7 school streets at places like Oaklands Elementary? #yyj #bced

School Streets

The School Streets program creates temporary car-free zones in front of participating schools to encourage walking, riding and rolling. It also helps reduce vehicle congestion during school drop-off and pick-up times.

The City partners with schools across Victoria to create School Streets. It was first piloted in spring 2021 and is now available for all schools in the City of Victoria.

Temporary street closures are in place for 30 to 60 minutes before and after school. The City works with schools and Parent Advisory Councils and provides all necessary road closure equipment. Please contact eng@victoria.ca if you are interested in pursuing a School Street.Screen shot of Go Victoria email from the City of Victoria:

Get Involved in School Streets

We're making it easier for kids to walk and roll to school with:

Funding support for crossing guards near schools

30 km/h speed limits near schools

Street stencils to increase driver awareness

Curb ramps and other accessibility improvements

Neighbourhood safety improvements like new and upgraded crosswalks

We also support School Streets, a program that creates temporary car-free zones in front of participating schools during pick-up and drop-off times.
