Book Review: George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Friday, and it’s time for another review. Today, I’m sharing my review of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel, George’s Marvellous Medicine.

George’s Marvellous Medicine was published in 1981 by Puffin Books and is 96 pages long.

The Plot
George, tired of his grandma’s constant nagging, grumpy mood and mean-spirited comments, decides to make his own medicine to replace the one she takes regularly. His concoction, made from an outrageous blend of household items that range from shampoo to animal pills, sets off a series of fantastical events, transforming Grandma in unexpected and hilarious ways.

Characters
George Kranky
George is a resourceful and inventive child who invents a special mixture, or medicine, hoping to teach his mean and grumpy grandma a lesson. Despite his mischievous nature, George has a good heart and only wants to help his family. His determination and quick thinking make him a lovable protagonist that readers will root for throughout the book.

Grandma
Grandma is a cantankerous old lady and serves as the book’s antagonist. She has a foul temper and is incredibly demanding, making life difficult for poor George. She is stubborn and ungrateful, constantly belittling him and calling him a liar. However, although her character has no redeeming qualities, she does add humour to the story with her exaggerated behaviour and outrageous reactions to George’s antics.

Mr Kranky and Mrs Kranky
Mrs Kranky, at first deeply cares for Grandma, not wanting her to come to harm, but when Grandma finally shrinks away, she feels relieved and that a burden has been lifted from her.

Mr Kranky sees a business opportunity in George’s medicine when he witnesses its effects on the farm animals and attempts to recreate it, hoping to sell it to other farmers, while showing no regard for the consequences.

Writing Style
Dahl’s writing style is characteristically playful, vividly descriptive, and effortlessly humorous. His prose is rhythmic, making it especially enjoyable to read aloud. His knack for capturing the imagination of young readers while entertaining adults with subtle satire remains unmatched.

His characters, particularly George and Grandma, are painted in bold strokes with clear personalities, allowing readers to easily cheer for the underdog and recoil from the villain.

Illustrations
Quentin Blake’s iconic illustrations are an inseparable part of Dahl’s storytelling. Each illustration complements the text, bringing the characters and their exaggerated mannerisms to life. Blake’s unique, sketch-like style captures the whimsy and chaos of the story perfectly.

Final Thoughts

<p>Scissors, including shears, are hand tools use for cutting by bringing two cutting edges to bear on the sheet or object being cut. Originally they were all shears, effectively hinged at the end further from the blades, when open like a <strong>V</strong>. They have been largely replaced by scissors that rotate around a pivot between their handles and blades, when open like an <strong>X</strong>. However, in normal usage terminology is inconsistent, with heavyweight <strong>X</strong>-based scissors used in gardening and horticulture being referred to as <em>shears.</em> Scissors weren&#8217;t made in large numbers until the later half of the eighteenth century, since when they have become widely used.</p> <p>In this article I will ignore farming and industrial uses of shears, for example to harvest wool from sheep or cut sheet metal (also known as <em>snips),</em> and concentrate more on domestic uses of lightweight shears and scissors. <p>The art of William Blake (1757–1827) is among the most innovative in Europe, and has had enduring influence. His work not only looks different, but an important part of that is in his unusual media. This article looks at how he created those striking images.</p> <p>Blake initially trained as an engraver, and throughout his subsequent career returned to commercial engraving work to supplement his income. On completion of that apprenticeship he became a pupil in the newly formed Royal Academy Schools, where he trained as a painter. From the outset he refused to paint in oils, at the time the major medium used by professional painters. That decision condemned his work to relative obscurity during his lifetime.</p> <p>Instead, Blake painted almost exclusively in watercolour and two media he developed himself and called <em>fresco,</em> although neither bears any resemblance to what is normally meant by that word. <p>Many notable painters have also made their own prints, and the two arts have informed one another. We&#8217;ve seen this most recently in the paintings of Félix Vallotton, where his late works have become simplified in the way that&#8217;s often used when making successful prints. A few artists have gone one step further and produced images that combine both techniques, where their work consists of a painted print.</p> <p>Most forms of printmaking involve the production of a plate of metal or wood in which cuts or marks are made. The surface is then covered in printing ink, and the paper (or other medium) is then pressed against that to transfer patterns of ink onto it. Monotypes are different in that the plate remains intact, and the image to be printed is formed on its surface before making a single impression from it. As with most types of printmaking, there are many variations.</p> <p>In 1794, William Blake had perfected his colour illuminated printing process, in publishing a series of illuminated books, and the following year he used it to produce a limited run of twelve large colour paintings. These formed the first major collection of paintings he offered for sale: one mark of the importance that he accorded them was his use of the term <em>fresco</em> to describe their medium.</p> <p>In fact, they weren&#8217;t made using a technique that resembled fresco painting at all.
