mercatus.org/research/policy-s Much of this material will be familiar to those who read my posts. As I often say, we should allow the things we want and ban the things we don’t want, especially things that harm public health and safety. We do not do this in North America. #zoning #BuildingCode #housing #SingleStair #shortage #USPolitics #inflation #homelessness

nashville.legistar.com/Legisla I am told by Councilor Rollin Horton that sunny #Nashville TN has begun the process to permit safer and more affordable #MissingMiddle homes up to six stories #housing #BuildingCode #SingleStair

I was unable to attend the first subcommittee meeting to discuss permitting smaller, more affordable, and safer #MissingMiddle residential buildings in Virginia due to vacation plans but I am told it went well and the fire safety experts had some constructive feedback on how to do it. I think we will get this right for the 2027 statewide building code. #Virginia #housing #BuildingCode #SingleStair

cbc.ca/news/canada/british-col “In [these] low- and mid-rise buildings, it isn't a choice between oversized, overbuilt American elevators versus smaller, cost-effective ones," Phelps Bondaroff said. "It's a choice between European elevators or no elevator at all." #accessibility #housing #MissingMiddle #BuildingCode #elevator

I'm trying to understand how #accessibility regulations are enforced in the United States for multifamily construction. It's complicated! This is the best resource I've found so far. #housing #ADA #FHA #BuildingCode equalhousing.org/fair-housing-

Very close to finished on my "More Affordable Elevators" code proposal for not especially accessible #Virginia. I am including an example of a recent apartment development near me that chose to offer no elevator service in 60% of new residential buildings. #accessibility #BuildingCode #housing

Working on a building code proposal change to permit more affordable elevators in Virginia for #MissingMiddle residential up to six stories tall. Any recent examples of smaller apartment buildings in the state that went without an elevator or failed to pencil due to elevator costs? I have examples from elsewhere but local examples are more interesting. #design #BuildingCode #housing #accessibility

bsky.app/profile/ncoxbarrett.b #Dallas is permitting some #MissingMiddle homes to trade costly but important sprinklers for other less expensive fire safety tools. Difficult area for regulatory reform given rising #housing costs and #wildfire risk. #BuildingCode #FireSafety

ncleg.gov/BillLookUp/2025/S492 North Carolina is considering permitting safer and more affordable “Mid-rise single-exit buildings” up to eight stories tall. This is two stories taller than we have been discussing here in Virginia. #SingleStair #BuildingCode #housing #NCLeg

cbsnews.com/boston/news/little Hey, so something to think about from #BuildingCode world. Buildings in North America are generally not built for a charging station fire, so a lot of obvious safety things haven’t been done. I super get anger about all of this but please be careful with the fires. #Tesla #WildFire #OnlyYouCanStopTeslaFires

Mild #softwaregore, but I get a real kick out of overpriced building/design codes (that you have to buy in order to design to what’s *required* by law) not even having a functioning purchasing website.

(Btw my husband did report the bug already)
