The end of the Cezanne trail is, alas, his grave in the Saint-Pierre Cemetery in Aix-en-Provence. The painter was caught in a storm while walking and collapsed. Contracting hypothermia then pneumonia, he lived a few more days - enough time to write a letter complaining to his dealer - and passed away in 1906 aged 67. #cezanne #art #provence #cemetery #grave

After being forced to sell Jas De Bouffan, Cezanne renovated a farmhouse on a hill, the Atelier Des Lauves turning it into his studio in 1902 (check out the canvas window). Despite any reservations Cezanne’s parents had about his career as an artist, he was allowed to practice his skills in the family dining room at Jas De Bouffan. Shown here via projection, later owners of the property broke up the paintings and sold them on. They have been united again for the first time and are on display at the local museum, Musée Granet #art #cezanne #Provence

Jas De Bouffan and its grounds were the subject of many of Cezanne’s portraits. At the house today they helpfully place prints of his paintings ahead of the scenes they portray, so you can see how he interpreted the scene and how things have changed over time. #art #cezanne #provence

Back to the Cezanne trail… Jas De Bouffan was the former Cezanne family home. It was purchased by the artist’s father, a banker, who wanted his son to adopt a more stable career. He was nevertheless more supportive of his son than is often supposed. The modern looking window at the top left was is in fact an alteration to bring more light into the painter’s studio.

There’s actually a stone mason who lives and works in the Bibémus quarry, near Cezanne’s home town, Aix-en-Provence. His beautiful house is without power and water, but does get pretty good 4G, so roughing it doesn’t get too boring. #art #cezanne #sculpture

The Bibémus Quarry is also in the hills near Provence. Cezanne was inspired by the unusual rock formations and the stone’s red colour and they appear in many of his paintings. #art #cezanne #impressionism

As it’s turning cold in the UK, it would of course be time to… uhm… post about my late summer holiday in Aix-en-Provence, to follow the Cezanne trail. Provence was the painters home town, not that he was much loved there in his lifetime. These are the hills around Montagne Sainte-Victoire, one of Cezanne’s favourite subjects, where he often hiked during his later years. #provence #Cezanne #impressionism #painting #art
