Es ist schon verrückt, diesen absurden Aufwand zu sehen – die Set Pieces, die schiere Menge an Statisten und Tieren, die alle orchestriert werden müssen, das ist schon beeindruckend. Natürlich ist der Film aufgrund seiner zahlreichen Rassismen zu kritisieren. Zwar müht sich das Drehbuch redlich daran ab, vor allen Dingen Arroganz, Hybris, Anmaßung und Anspruchsdenken der britischen Kolonialmacht nach allen Regeln der Kunst zu zerlegen. Doch das gewährt noch lange keine Absolution.
Gefallen hat mir die Vielschichtigkeit, mit der hier der geopolitische Clusterfuck in der arabischen Welt zu dieser Zeit kartografiert wird. Denn der Mechanismus, Völkern letztlich den Zugang zur Moderne zu verwehren und sie so zu kontrollieren, auszubeuten und gegeneinander aufzuhetzen, hat schließlich bis heute Hochkonjunktur. Es sind nicht die Schachfiguren, die gewinnen, es sind die Schachspieler*innen.
