Google has just informed me that I can use a 20% solution of vinegar to kill cleavers. I am curious to see if it works, so I have made some up and sprayed it on a patch of the cleavers in my back yard. If this works, there's going to be vinegar everywhere!

And here is what a handful of cleavers roots look like. I shake the soil off and tuck them into a tissue, then in the house I have a paper towel sewn up one side I'm keeping them in.

The maddery-colored parts are the roots, the shiny white bits are stems.

Cleavers roots are so thin and light, a good breeze will blow them away. Plus the breeze was laden with . . . country dairy-air, as we punnily like to call it. So I only collected a little, then I brought in three, no four ticks!
