Reading the incident report on the recent Cloudflare outage.
There is a snippet of Rust code which was where the error was that broke the system after trying to read a config file that was too big. And it was because of an `.unwrap()`. That seems like a crazy thing in production. Not even an `.expect()` or something. Just unwrapped the error and broke half the internet for a few hours.
I see a bunch of posts rushing to criticize cloudflare devs.
But lets face it - its not technical chops - but really pushy management that forces us to release low-quality stuff
Let's be kind to our fellow devs.
To round off the #cloudFlareDown and #githubdown we had an hour long power outage this morning .... seriously considering getting a power station for the coffee machine because of that 😉
What a great and transparent analysis of the outage. No excuses, honest admission of mistakes, and even shared an internal chat. Many large corporations could learn from this.
