The other two are EPs. The Dan Bern EP is a full-band set that was recorded in Fall 2020 with all parties remote (obviously). An old favorite on there in “Butterflies,” a song from the 1990s which gets its first studio recording here. A timely song about George Floyd.

The Mangan thing is a sampler of songs from his great release, “Nice, Nice, Very Nice.”

The Bern album is a double CD thing that he released independently (in Canada?) shortly after his major label debut album. Some of his great early songs, including a few songs that went on to be re-recorded better with on his next album Fifty Eggs.

The Divine Comedy album is definitely short, but among my favorites of Neil Hannon’s. No fat on it.

Gracie Abrams, The Story of Us - close-up of the artist’s head on a white background, eyes looking to her left

Elliott Smith, Roman Candle - a black and white picture of a woman and a man, neither the artist, with winter hats and coffee, walking through what appears to be a jewelry stand on the street with a vendor and a shopper

Bern has written lots of music for TV and film projects - most prominently “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” and “Get Him to the Greek,” but bits and pieces in tons of other stuff. This is one set of that music that actually got a release.

A set of very short, cute kids’ songs - many about transportation as you’d expect from the pictures, but a lot of general stuff too.

The Dan Bern albums are a collection of songs he recorded and submitted for the Tony Kornheiser Show (a sports podcast). Not all of them aired, apparently, but the collections are full of punchy songs about sports and other stuff which is presumably related to this show.

I don’t care at all about sports but a good sports song can be as funny or affecting as a song about anything else.

The Bookie Baker song is nice. I picked up because of Bern and Shimoni. He has a cool voice - reminds me of The Tallest Man on Earth.

The Brandi Carlile album was how I discovered her, through some free MP3 of the titular single. Glad I did, as I still keep up with her.

The Duckworth Lewis Method is Neil Hannon’s cricket side project. I know even less about cricket than I do about tennis, but this is fun.

Dan Bern releases:

“Tennis Songs” is an iTunes EP that is long since out of print. He’s released a longer tennis album which includes different recordings of these, but this one is a nice, folky distillation of some of his better ones.

“The Swastika EP” has a song about reclaiming the symbol. It also has a few of my favorites: the lilting “Friends” and “Lithuania,” a reflection about his family history in the holocaust and the turn of the millennium.

“Walk Hard” is full of great genre and era pastiche, and very funny. Reilly sells it, and many of the songs are written or co-written by my favorite modern folk artist, Dan Bern.

The other Bern release is a single that was released on Bandcamp back in the before-times, early to mid 2016. It imagined a world where he won the presidency and the lunacy that ensued. It was deleted from his catalog after the absurdity became a reality.

Today’s listening:

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, “Wild God”
John C. Reilly et al, “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”
Lana Del Rey, “Ultraviolence”
Dan Bern, “Trump”

Collage of four album covers: NIck Cave and the Bad Seeds’ “Wild God” - a white background with the album title artificially embossed on it. John C. Reilly’s “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” - a creak background with a picture of the shirtless actor wearing a beaded necklace and making a weird face. Lana Del Rey’s “Ultraviolence” - a greyscale image of the artist standing behind the open door of a car. Dan Bern’s “Trump” - a not-so-flattering painting of Donald Trump with a big, red cross-out circle over his face

And one more: Dan Bern w/ Jane’s Great Dane, “Starting Over”

Had this digitally since it came out in early 2024, but the CD is finally out and I rebought it. A good collection of never-before-recorded songs that I’ve known forever from live tapes and some newer compositions. I like it overall - sometimes my brain has a difficult transition to make from years of hearing a solo acoustic song filled in by a band, though.

An album cover of Starting Over by Dan Bern w/ Jane’s Great Dane - picture of a man (Bern) carrying a guitar was under a wash of blues and pinks with paint splotches

My final love song for February's #StupidAccordionTricks, here's #DanBern's unrecorded (and very silly) #CashAndNin, an NSFW exploration into two tastes that just might go great together.

I was really hoping I'd never find grounds to play this song again, last performed twenty years ago at a benefit for Spartacus Books - the first time my name was ever on a gig poster. But the longer you live, the more disappointments the world dishes up for you. From the wild #DanBern songbook, it's #Fascist. "It's the fascist in me": your most important job in this life is to find that inner fascist and keep him away from the steering wheel.
