While hiking in the Mojave Desert of Arizona with my camera in hand, I noticed this cute chipmunk enjoying some fresh green snacks under a bush. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting soft shadows on the dry ground dotted with pebbles and small plants. His tan and brown fur with faint stripes blended perfectly with the warm earth tones, while his bright eyes and full cheeks made the moment irresistible.

The American Pronghorn—sometimes called a "Speed Goat"—is neither a goat nor a true antelope but a species of its own! What’s certain, though, is its incredible speed. With bursts over 55 mph, it’s the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere and possibly the fastest on Earth in sustained runs.

Capturing one in motion is no easy task, as they are skittish and quick to vanish. I was lucky to snap this shot in the Smoke Creek Desert, CA—a rugged, remote landscape where these animals thrive. 🌾🏜

Not actually a goat, but some use the slang “goat” for it! The American Pronghorn is often called an “antelope,” though it’s neither—it’s a unique species of its own. What’s accurate is the “speed.” The fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere, it can hit over 55 mph—even on rough, rocky terrain. They’re also skittish, making them tough to photograph. Most of my shots are of them running away, so I felt lucky to capture this one moving perpendicular to me.

I took this photo in the Smoke Creek Desert, Lassen County, CA—a remote high desert managed by the BLM. It hosts pronghorn, wild horses, and burros. Much of the area is only accessible by foot, horseback, or a rugged vehicle.
